BRONX, NY -- The baseball team visited CUNYAC foe Lehman College for a doubleheader on Friday evening at South Field, splitting the two games with the Lightning. The Bloodhounds lost game one, 10-1, but bounced back for a thrilling, 13-10, victory in game two. The Bloodhounds move to 5-23 (3-5 CUNYAC) on the season, while Lehman moves to 6-9 (4-4 CUNYAC) on the year.
John Jay scored the first run of the day on an RBI single from sophomore
Michael Manzoeillo in the top of the second inning of game two, but the Lightning answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to gain control. Lehman would go onto win, but the Bloodhounds would shake it right off and come back with a big performance in game two. After Lehman went ahead, 1-0, John Jay scored five runs in the top of the second inning, large in part thanks to a grand slam from sophomore
Christopher Nunez. The Bloodhounds scored five more runs an inning later, stringing together multiple hits including a 2-RBI single from freshman
Ivan Massari. John Jay led 13-7 heading into the last inning and, despite a big final frame from the Lighting in which they scored three runs, held on to earn the win.
Freshman
Thomas Salerno had an incredible game two, notching four hits, along with four runs scored, a stolen base, and an RBI. Freshman
Michael Mauro and
Juan Maldonado each had three hits on the day, while Mauro added two walks. Nunez went 2-4 in game two with six RBIs, while Massari went 2-3 with a walk and three RBIs. Sophomore
Ismael Tatis earned the save in game two, getting the last two outs of the game on strikeouts.
The Bloodhounds will look to make it two in a row with a road game against St. Joseph's College - LI on Tuesday, April 19 at 4 p.m. in Patchogue, NY.
