BROOKLYN, NY -- The baseball team split a doubleheader with Baruch on Saturday afternoon at Maimonides Park, handing the Bearcats their first CUNYAC loss of the season. The Bloodhounds took down first place Baruch, 6-4, in game two after losing the first game, 10-2. John Jay moves to 6-27 (4-6 CUNYAC) on the season, while the Bearcats go to 11-8 (9-1 CUNYAC) on the year.
After a rough game one, the Bloodhounds bounced back in a big way in the second game. After giving up a run in the top of the first, John Jay rallied for five massive runs in the bottom of the second inning, thanks to RBI singles from freshman
Anthony Agosta,
Michael Manzoeillo,
Juan Maldonado, and
Ethan Simaan, along with a sacrifice fly from
Michael Mauro. Freshman
Marc Weeks held Baruch scoreless after the first inning until the final frame, which John Jay entered with a 6-1 lead. Weeks started to tire, as Baruch chipped away at the lead, but Maldonado came in to close things out for John Jay and earn the save.
Week's line finished at 6.1 innings and a career-high 10 strikeouts in game two. Agosta had a three-hit game in game two with an RBI and run scored. Freshman
Matthew Brennan had two hits on the day. Manzoeillo had two hits on the day.
The athletics department honored seniors
Christopher Nunez and
Marlon Hiciano prior to the game. Thanks for your contributions to the baseball program!
The Bloodhounds will look to make it two in a row tomorrow as they travel to take on Manhattanville at noon.
