Softball's Offense Overpowers Lehman Leading to Doubleheader Sweep

BRONX, NY -- The softball team's offense exploded for 21 runs on Tuesday afternoon, allowing the Bloodhounds to cruise to a doubleheader sweep of Lehman College at South Field. John Jay won game one, 12-2, in six innings, and then went on to win game two, 9-0, in five innings. The Bloodhounds improve to 11-17 (8-6 CUNYAC) on the season, while the Lightning drop to 8-10 (6-8 CUNYAC) on the year.

Sophomore America Rivera started game one and went four innings allowing just two earned runs and striking out three. Lehman actually scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first, but the Bloodhounds answered quickly. After scoring a run in the second, John Jay took the lead in the third on a two-RBI double from freshman Maleea Gallaspy. John Jay would not allow a run the rest of the way, and scored a combined eight runs in the final two innings which were highlighted by the second career homer from freshman Mackenzie Tresch. Junior Julianne Graepel closed out the game going two innings and striking out five while allowing just one hit.

Freshman Rylea Sandel pitched her first career complete game in game two, striking out a career-high seven batters and allowing zero runs. The Bloodhounds struck first again, this time in the third inning and kept it rolling. RBIs from Sandel and freshman Alisha Cherian kickstarted the scoring, and RBIs from freshmen Jordyn Prince and Emily Sperl sealed the deal in the later innings.

Cherian went 4-7 on the day with three runs scored and three RBIs. Sandel went 4-6 with two runs scored and 4 RBIs. Rivera, Sperl, and Prince each had three hits.

The Bloodhounds are back at it for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 28 against Ramapo at 3 p.m. in Mahwah, NJ.
