Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with University of Saint Joseph

WEST HARTFORD, CT -- The softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the University of Saint Joseph on Tuesday afternoon in West Connecticut. The Bloodhounds won the first game of the day, 4-2, but then dropped game two of the double dip, 5-2. John Jay moves to 5-8 on the season, while the Blue Jays move to 11-6 on the year.

Sophomore America Rivera earned the win in game one, tossing a complete game allowing just one earned run and striking out four. The game was scoreless through the first three innings, until freshman Mackenzie Tresch broke the drought with an RBI single to center. After a sacrifice fly by freshman Emily Sperl in the top of the sixth, Tresch plated another run with another RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0. The Blue Jays didn't go away quietly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame, but they weren't able to scratch across any more runs and the Bloodhounds held on.

The Blue Jays were able to recover quickly in game two, and took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. That lead grew to 5-0 heading into the sixth, and the Bloodhounds were able to score two runs the rest of the way but not able to complete the comeback.

Freshman Rylea Sandel reached base safely five times on the day, combining to go 4-6 with a walk. Junior Julianne Graepel went 2-6 with a run scored and pitched 4.2 innings in relief in game two notching two strikeouts.

The Bloodhounds will take on Ramapo College on Thursday, April 7 in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. in Mahwah, NJ.
