Women's Soccer Earns 1-0 Triumph Over Manhattanville On Vazquez Late Goal

Purchase, NY - The John Jay women's soccer team was pitted in a stalemate with the Manhattanville College Valiants until the final moments of the match in the 89th minute, Daniela Vazquez was able to boot one past the Valiants goalkeeper as the Bloodhounds earned a hard-fought 1-0 triumph on Saturday morning.

John Jay moves to 2-1-0 on the season while the Valiants fall to 0-4-0 on the year.

For Vazquez, it marks her first collegiate goal as she converted off well-timed feeds from Jillian Golden and Katie Healy. Golden recorded her first helper of the year while upping her career total to seven while Healy notches her second of the season and 27th of her career.

The Valiants nearly went ahead in the opening moments of the contest, as Megan Leser sent a header that sailed wide of the net. Moments later, Natalie Aracena rocketed a shot that sailed high over the goal.

In the 27', Leser again found herself in the box and headed the ball on target but John Jay's netminder, Alexa Pyatsky, was able to turn away the shot.

The Bloodhounds first chance came off the foot of Golden, but Macey Girard was there for the stop.

Both teams recorded a combined six shots in the opening frame with Manhattanville holding a 4-2 edge.

When play resumed for the second half, it was John Jay that controlled the early momentum as Lucia Giangaspero fired off a shot that found the arms of Girard.

Healy had a few chances, four minutes apart, as her first attempt went high before her second was stopped by Girard.

In the 86th, Brooke Fontaine stepped up for a corner kick as Galicia Monforte corralled the ball in the box, but her shot was blocked before Vazquez ultimately netted the game-winner.

John Jay finished the match outshooting Manhattanville, 8-5, with four of those attempts on target.

The Bloodhounds embark on a two-match road trip, beginning on Tuesday, September 13 when the team travels to Sarah Lawrence College before concluding the road trip at Cedar Crest College on Saturday, September 17.
