BRONX, NY -- The women's volleyball team earned its first CUNYAC victory of the season on Tuesday night, defeating the Lehman College Lightning, 3-1 (25-8, 25-13, 20-25, 25-11), for the second time in a week at the APEX. The Bloodhounds improve to 5-1 (1-0 CUNYAC) on the season while the Lightning fall to 1-5 (0-2 CUNYAC) on the year.
The Bloodhounds were firing on all cylinders right out of the gate, scoring 11 of the first 12 points of set one. Lehman was never able to cut into the lead at all, and a service ace by sophomore
Faith Harer put the finishing touches on a 25-8 set win.
John Jay rode that momentum into set two which started with the Bloodhounds only holding a narrow 14-12 lead. However, back-to-back kills from Harer sparked an 11-1 run to close the set which was capped by a monster kill from sophomore
Reilly Catan to finish off the 25-13 win.
After a brief hiccup in set three, John Jay once again dominated set four. This time, the Bloodhounds closed the set on a 12-2 run highlighted by a kill from sophomore
Rylea Sandel. The Bloodhounds won the set 25-11, and won the match 3-1.
Harer piled up a season-high 15 kills and added five service aces. Sophomore
Johnelle Pierre smacked seven kills, while Sandel and sophomore
Amanda Marte chipped in five kills each. Sophomore
Meghan Smith collected a game-high 26 assists.
The Bloodhounds will be back at it on Saturday, September 24 when they travel to Newburgh, NY to take part in a tri-match hosted by Mount Saint Mary. They will also take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
