Three First Half Goals Propels Men's Soccer To First CUNYAC Win; Defeats CCNY 3-1 On Wednesday

New York, NY - Freshman midfielder Brayan Alvarez scored the first two goals of his John Jay career while senior Nicholas DiBetta recorded his first career goal as the Bloodhounds bested CCNY, 3-1, in the conference lid-lifter on Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 2-8-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play while the Beavers fall to 0-4-1 and 0-1-0 in CUNY play.

"Tonight was an important win to start conference play in the right way," commented head coach Zade Haobsh. "The team was united, energetic, and ready to compete. There's still a lot of CUNYAC games left so we need to make sure to bring the same intensity to each opponent."

Alvarez, the reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, was able to give the home team an early advantage as Kevin Luciano was able to steal the ball and locate Alvarez, who was able to bury the scoring chance to put the Bloodhounds ahead, 1-0.

Five minutes later, John Jay struck for the second goal of the contest. Jonathan Granados crossed the ball into the box that found the foot of DiBetta, who was able to push one past CCNY goalkeeper, Carlos Garcia, as the Bloodhounds went up 2-0.

The visitors had a chance to get on the board but Yusuf Abdelmegid's shot attempt sailed high over the goal in the 14th minute.

Following a foul to CCNY, Alvarez was able to leave his mark on the contest. He was able to head the ball on target, but was denied a chance, but, the first-year midfielder was able to locate the loose ball and fired it past the Beavers keeper, upping John Jay's led to 3-0.

For the Alvarez, it marked his first two collegiate goals. This comes on the heels of tallying two assists in the non-conference tilt at Medgar Evers.

CCNY was able to take some of the momentum and capitalize, as Cheik Diakite was able to beat Solis off the feed from Antony Sumba, as the Beavers trailed by two, 3-1.

John Jay outshot CCNY, 12-4, in the opening stanza, but both teams managed to just record five shots in the second half as the Bloodhounds finished the game with a 15-6 advantage, 10 of which coming on target.

Solis was credited with one save while his counterpart Garcia finished with seven stops, five of which coming in the opening half.

John Jay will look to close out the weekend 2-0 in CUNY play when they will return to Randall's Island on Saturday, October 1, when they travel to take on Baruch.

Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
