Women's Soccer Falls To Rutgers-Newark, 2-1, On Wednesday Afternoon

New York, NY - The John Jay women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 non-conference decision to Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday afternoon from Randall's Island - Field 75. 

The Bloodhounds (1-1) fell behind in the 15th minute of the contest as the Scarlet Raiders (2-2) were able to win control of the loose ball in the middle of the box. Leila Ettayebi settled the ball and fired off a right-footed shot that went past the out-stretched reach of graduate goalkeeper Alexa Pyatsky, giving the visitors an early 1-0 advantage. 

Katie Healy, who was recently named CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Women's Soccer Player of the Week, had created an opportunity for the home team, but, her shot attempt was deflected by a Scarlet Raiders' defender. 

The Bloodhounds didn't waste much time in finding the equalizer as in the 52' Healy found the game-tying score, tying the match at 1-1.  Daniela Vazquez lofted the ball that found the foot of Healy, who was able to put one past Rutgers-Newark keeper Katie McLaughlin. For Healy, it marked her second goal of the season while Vazquez recorded her second helper in the process.
 
The match remained a virtual stalemate, as Pyatsky kept the visitors off the board, making thanks to the impressive stops by Pyatasky, who denied three shots, Following a foul called on the Bloodhounds in the 78th minute, Camila Howard was able to put the Scarlet Raiders ahead, after converting on a long free kick that beat Pyatsky to her right as Rutgers-Newark went up, 2-1. 

The Bloodhounds staged one final valiant effort as Brooke Fontaine was able to head the ball but her scoring chance was denied by McLaughlin. 

John Jay was outshot by Rutgers-Newark, 17-4 (11-3 in shots on goal). Pyatsky was credited with a career-high nine saves on the afternoon. Her counterpart, McLaughlin, made two saves. 
 
The Bloodhounds return to the pitch this Saturday, as they will host Manhattanville College for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff in Purchase, NY on the campus of the Valiants.
