Men's Soccer Falls To Whitman On Thursday Afternoon

New York, NY - The John Jay men's soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to Whitman College on Thursday afternoon from Randall's Island - Field 83.

The Bloodhounds (0-3-0) trailed 1-0 with ten minutes remaining in the first half after Whitman's (3-1-0) Jossue Tobar stole the ball away and launched a long strike from approximately 45 yards out that beat the outstretched reach of sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Solis

The Blues controlled the majority of the tempo of the match, until the 55th minute when the Bloodhounds were able to find the tying score.

Sophomore Hans Merilan dribbled the ball a majority of the way before spotting teammate Kevin Luciano on the left side. The Edgemont, NY native lofted a towering strike that found the back right part of the goal, tying the game at 1-1. For Luciano, it marked his first of the season and second of his career. For Merilan, it marks his first collegiate helper.

The Blues responded with what turned out to be the game-winner in the 58th minute as Eric Gantt scored off the assist from Erick Perez-Cuellar off the corner kick. Whitman added three more goals to preserve the win in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Solis made seven stops on 25 shots faced on the afternoon. Arthur Langlet saw his first collegiate action, coming in for Solis in the later stages of the match.

The Bloodhounds return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon as John Jay welcomes Saint Elizabeth University to Randall's Island - Field 10.  Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
