Men's Soccer Earns Pivotal CUNYAC Win Over Lehman, 1-0, On Saturday Afternoon

Kevin Luciano sets all-time career assists mark in the victory

New York, NY - The John Jay men's soccer team earned a pivotal CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) win on Saturday afternoon, as the Bloodhounds defeated the Lehman College Lightning, 1-0, on Randall's Island - Field 75.

With the triumph, John Jay improves to 6-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play while the Lightning falter to 4-5-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the conference.

Today's result was John Jay's first win over Lehman in their last eight tries (0-7-1) and marked the first home regular-season win over the Lightning since October 6, 2012, in which the Bloodhounds defeated Lehman, 3-2.

The Bloodhounds seized the early tiempo of the contest, as Daniel Rosa fired a shot a minute into the match, but Lehman's Andres Barajas, was there to make the stop.

John Jay had a pair of chances in the opening moments, as Joshua Escobar sent the ball into the box from the right corner. Charlie Metz outsoared his defender, but his header was blocked by a Lehman defender. Junior Guaman located the loose ball and fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Barajas.

Lehman tested John Jay's Tyler Solis on the ensuing possession as Mohamed Ali Sogoba fired a shot that the junior netminder deflected aside. Cameron Dennis was next for Lehman to try and break the scoreless match, but Solis made a diving stop on the right-footed opportunity.

The first half concluded with both teams heading into the break knotted at 0-0 as John Jay outshot Lehman, 13-8 in the opening frame with both teams sending five shots on target.

When play resumed, it was the visitors who attempted to break the stalemate first, as Dennis fired off a shot that went wide before Solis was able to make a stop on Ali Sogoba's chance.

In the 50', John Jay organized and attempted a corner kick. Tri-captain Kevin Luciano, booted the ball into the box as Justin Gharbin was there to finish the chance as the Bloodhounds struck first, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.

For Gharbin, it marked his sixth goal of the season and 15th of his John Jay career. Luciano was credited with the assist, his first of the season and 12th of his career.

The helper was a milestone for Luciano, who becomes John Jay's active career assist leader, surpassing John Jay Hall of Famer, Korede Griffith and Jason Bowrey, who each had 11 helpers for their careers.

The Bloodhounds defense held up over the remaining portion of the match, limiting the Lightning to just two shot chances, one that Solis made the stop to preserve the shutout and his fourth clean sheet of the season.

For the match, John Jay outshot Lehman, 20-12, while the Lightning had a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Solis finished with seven stops while Barajas concluded the rain-soaked afternoon with five saves.

John Jay closes out the 2023 regular season on Wednesday, October 18, as they will host Brooklyn College on Randall's Island - Field 74 at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Night.
