Women's Soccer Closes Out 2023 Regular Season With Fourth Straight Shutout In Win Over Lehman

Bronx, NY - The defending three-time CUNY Athletic (CUNYAC) women's soccer champions, the John Jay College Bloodhounds, closed out the 2023 regular season with their fourth-straight shutout, as the Bloodhounds blanked Lehman, 6-0, on Monday evening.

With tonight's outcome, John Jay finishes the year with a 7-5-0 overall record while concluding conference play with a 4-1-0 mark. The Lightning closes the year at 4-7-1 and 3-2-0 in league play.

Lehman nearly broke the stalemate in the ninth minute as Barbara Meda sent a low-lining shot but that was stopped by Lily Velo. On the counter, the newly-minted Player of the Week, Nora O'Connor, booted a shot that was directed left. O'Connor gained a second chance three minutes later and got the Bloodhounds on the board first with her 17 goal of the season in the 15'. John Jay upped their lead in the 29' as Connor struck again for her second tally of the contest as the visitors went ahead 2-0 on her 18th goal of the year.

The Bloodhounds continued to apply pressure as Zoe Specht fired a shot that was kicked aside by the Lightning's Diallo Ramatoulaye, that setup a corner kick. On the next offensive possession by the Bloodhounds, O'Connor completed her fourth hat-trick of the season with a goal that made it 3-0. Nearly a minute later, Mikayla Schoch netted in her fifth goal of the season, extending the lead to four.

Sofia Astarbi booted a shot with seven minutes left in the half that was turned away by Ramatoulaye, ending the first stanza. John Jay took nine shots in the opening half, seven of which were on target while the Lightning were held to that early chance.

When play resumed for the second half, Emma Fisher had the first chance for the visitors but her chance was denied by Diallo. Ten minutes later, Fisher capitalized and found the back of the net, as John Jay went ahead 5-0, on Fisher's fourth goal of the season.  Velo was challenged in the 57' as Melanie Siranaula sent a low-shot attempt that found the waiting arms of the Bloodhounds keeper.

John Jay added their final score of the match as Fisher recorded her second goal of the night off the feed from Schoch in the 64' as the Bloodhounds netted their sixth goal of the game.

For the match, the visitors took 18 shots with 12 of those finding their way on net. Velo made three saves on the evening while Ramatoulaye finished with six stops.

The Bloodhounds will get set to defend their league title this Saturday, as John Jay will be the No. 2 seed in the postseason.
