Men's Soccer Earns First CUNYAC Victory Of The Season; Defeats CCNY, 4-2, On Wednesday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay men's soccer team tallied three goals in the opening stanza while adding an insurance tally in the later stages of the second half as the Bloodhounds defeated The City College of New York (CCNY) Beavers, 4-2, on Wednesday evening for their first CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) win of the season.

With the win, the Bloodhounds stand at 3-6-1; 1-1-1 in conference play while the Beavers falter to 1-6-0 and 1-2 in league action.

The visitors wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as Brayan Alvarez received the feed from Nicolas DiBetta and beat CCNY's Carlos Garcia from the right side as John Jay took a 1-0 lead.

For Alvarez, it marked his first goal of the season while DiBetta has now registered an assist in two of his last three matches.

The Bloodhounds continued to apply pressure and were rewarded in the 12th minute. Junior Guaman's shot attempt was blocked but Kevin Luciano lingered around and spotted the loose ball and beat Garcia to push the Bloodhounds' lead to 2-0.

For Luciano, it marked his team-leading sixth goal of the season and 10th of his career while Guaman, who has now recorded an assist in back-to-back matches, was credited with his fourth helper of the season.

CCNY's first chance came in the 15' as Yusuf Abdelmegid fired a shot that John Jay's Tyler Solis was able to stop, setting up a corner kick for the Beavers.

On the second corner, Aliou Ndiaye sent the ball that found the foot of Abdelmegid, as he completed the chance, cutting the Bloodhounds' lead in half, 2-1.

John Jay continued to apply pressure, as John Jay took three shot attempts, two coming from Alvarez, that were on target, but Garcia was there to make the stop.

CCNY found the equalizer in the 38th as the connection between Cheik Diakite and Abdelmegid worked, as Abdelmegid notched his second goal of the match, tying the score at 2-2.

With two minutes remaining before halftime, tri-captain Jonathan Granados delivered a strike but the chance sailed wide of the target. A few seconds after that, the Bloodhounds broke the tie.

Newcomer Ian Hartigan received the feed from Alvarez and buried the chance past Garcia for his first collegiate goal while giving John Jay a one-goal lead.

When play resumed for the second half, the Beavers were the ones that seized the momentum, as Kiernan Sullivan sent a shot that sailed high over the goal. In the 54', Diakite had an opportunity for the game-tying goal but his attempt went wide right. Mikhael Torres created space in the 56' and booted a shot that found the waiting arms of Solis.

John Jay increased their advantage by two in the 67th as Justin Gharbin got the pass from Andrew Santos and converted on his third goal of the season.

The Bloodhounds recorded 18 total shots in the match, ten of which found their way on goal. Solis faced eight shots while making two saves while his counterpart, Garcia, was credited with six stops.

John Jay will look to make it back-to-back as they will take on York on Saturday, October 7 at Aviator Field #2 in Brooklyn.

Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
