Women's Soccer Drops CUNYAC Opener At Home Against CCNY, 4-3, On Saturday Morning

New York, NY - The John Jay women's soccer team held a two-goal advantage at halftime over CCNY, but the Beavers netted four goals in the second half while holding off a late surge by the Bloodhounds, as John Jay dropped their CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opener, 4-3, at Randall's Island - Field 70 on Saturday morning.

With the outcome, the Bloodhounds fall to 3-5-0 overall while the Beavers run their record to 4-4.

Today was the conference lidlifter for both teams.

This morning's outcome was the first time that the Bloodhounds had lost a conference match since September 19, 2018, when John Jay fell to the College of Staten Island, 3-0.

John Jay had won 19 consecutive conference matches prior to today's outcome while outscoring their league-foes, 99-4, during this span.

The Bloodhounds wasted little time in scoring the first goal of the match as Zoe Specht settled the free kick from Alexandria Nembhard and curled a shot across the goal into the top left of the net.

For Specht, it marked her second goal of the season while Nembhard tallied her first helper of the season and second of her Bloodhound tenure.

Ten minutes later, John Jay struck again as Lucia Giangaspero found Nora O'Connor on the give and go in the box with O'Connor finishing the chance for her eighth goal of the season and extending John Jay's lead to 2-0.

For Giangaspero, it was her second assist of the season and of her career.

The Bloodhounds continued to apply pressure but CCNY's Amelia Cataldo was able to keep the deficit at two, stopping Giangaspero in the 38'.

When play resumed for the second half, Giangaspero nearly found John Jay's third goal of the match but Cataldo thwarted the scoring chance.

Both teams played more physical. In the 58', the visitors got on the scoreboard as Laura Villatoro sent a shot to the back left of the goal that got past Bloodhounds' keeper, Lily Velo, as CCNY trimmed the deficit in half.

John Jay took ten shots in the opening half with four of those chance finding their way on target.

The Beavers found the equalizer in the 59' as Sara Rodriguez netted the game-tying goal.

The intensity continued to pick up heading into the later stages of the contest. Brooke Fontaine nearly put John Jay ahead off a free kick attempt, but her chance found the waiting arms of Cataldo.

CCNY broke the stalemate with a little over five minutes to go as Charlotte Foberg connected on a long-range goal, giving the visitors a 3-2 edge. In the 88', the Beavers tacked on an insurance marker as Karen Pineda scored off the feed from Villatoro, doubling up the Bloodhounds, 4-2.

John Jay didn't quit and staged a comeback, as with time winding down, O'Connor recorded her second goal of the match, trimming the CCNY lead to one, 4-3, but the final whistle blew on the Bloodhounds' comeback attempt.

John Jay took 19 shots in the match with a total of 11 finding their way on the mark. Cataldo made eight saves in the match while Velo notched three stops on nine shots faced.

The Bloodhounds will be back in action on October 11 as they will take on Medgar Evers.
