Women's Basketball Falls In Home Opener To Maine Maritime On Saturday

Four Bloodhounds score in double-figures in first home game of the 2023-24 season

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball dropped their home opener on Saturday, falling to the Maine Maritime Mariners, 73-63.

The Bloodhounds (1-1) had four players score in double-figures, led by Chayanne Kelly, who poured in a team-leading 18 points. Ayanna Edwards tallied 13 points, while hitting on 7 of 8 from the free-throw line and dishing out three assists. Kamryn Hammond registered a double-double for the second straight contest, finishing with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds in 34 minutes of action. Tiffany Bogle also notched ten points on an efficient 4 of 6 shooting from the floor.

Three Mariners (2-0) tallied double-digits, led by Evelyn Dagan, who poured in a game-high 23 points, which included five three-pointers. Sydney Briscoe posted a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds while adding three steals in 29 minutes of play while Grace Huntwork netted 11 points.

The Mariners came out hitting back-to-back three-pointers in taking an early lead but John Jay responded with six straight points, capped by a layup from Hannah Ruberto.  Kelly gave the Bloodhounds an extra boast, as John Jay staged a 13-2 run, started by Kelly connecting on a left-wing three-pointer and drawing contact which increased the lead to 19-10 following an Ashely Zeolla mid-range jumper at the 1:52 mark. John Jay's defense held Maine Maritime to just one made field goal over the three-minute run while the Bloodhounds converted 5 of 9, with Zeolla netting five of the 13 points during the run. The Mariners closed out the first with two straight buckets that trimmed the deficit to five, 19-14. John Jay scored 12 of their 19 first quarter points from inside-the-paint.

Maine Maritime opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run, as Holly Reeder-Morning capped it off with layup off the feed from Hailey Blanchard that gave the visitors a 23-19 edge. The Bloodhounds staged an 8-2 outburst over the next three minute in retaking the lead, 27-25, as Bogle hit from the left elbow to cap the run. Edwards was the catalyst over this stretch, scoring six of the eight points while limiting the Mariners to just one made field goal in five tries. The visitors scored five of the final nine points in the frame, but Hammond's layup with eleven seconds to go before halftime gave the Bloodhounds the lead, 31-30.

Maine Maritime came out of the break hitting 7 of their first 11 shots in route to posting a 16-2 run and taking a 46-33 lead as Dagan capped the run with a layup at the 5:18 mark. The Bloodhounds responded by outscoring the Mariners, 9-1, over the next 2:27, to trim the lead down to five, 49-44, after Kelly hit one of two from the free-throw line. Kelly heaved up a three-pointer that just beat the buzzer as the Bloodhounds were down 51-47 heading into the fourth.

When play commenced for the fourth quarter, Maine Maritime took early control, scoring ten of the first 15 points in the frame to increase their lead to 61-52 following a three from Huntwork.
John Jay got to within seven, 61-54, after Kelly converted on the layup from Edwards, but the Mariners hit on five of six from the line that extended their lead to 66-54 with 4:38 showing on the game clock. The Bloodhounds closed out the game scoring nine of the final 16 points but the mariners held on for their second win of the season.

The Bloodhounds shot 35.5 percent from the floor (22 of 62) while the Mariners converted on 40 percent (26 of 65). Maine Maritime shot 31 percent from three-point range while the Bloodhounds struggled to find their touch from the outside, hitting on just 2 of 13 from deep.  Both teams finished with 11 offensive rebounds despite the visitors holding a 42-40 on the boards.

John Jay continues their homestand on Monday evening as they welcome Ramapo to The Doghouse for 6:00 p.m. tipoff.
