New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team erased four-point halftime deficit by outscoring the visiting Ramapo College Roadrunners, 25-16, in the final frame to post a 64-59 home triumph on Monday evening.
Coach's Corner | Head Coach Lynda Day Postgame:
"A flat start on both ends of the floor, but we made the necessary adjustments that helped put us in a position to take the lead at the start of the fourth quarter. I was proud that we kept our composure on both ends of the court and secure the win against a very good opponent in Ramapo."
John Jay (2-1) had three players score in double-figures, led by Chayanne Kelly, who netted a career-best 24 points on 8 of 16 shooting from the field while connecting on 5 of 6 from three-point range. The Harlem, NY native also grabbed five rebounds in her 35 minutes of action.

Ashley Zeolla added 16 points on an equally efficient 7 of 16 shooting performance from the floor while pulling down eight caroms in 34 minutes of play. For the third straight game, Kamryn Hammond recorded a double-double, as she poured in 12 points and corralled 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of action. Hannah Ruberto and Tiffany Bogle each contributed six points on a combined 6 of 14 shooting from the floor while pulling down 13 combined rebounds, as Bogle finished with nine.

Ramapo (1-1) had two players reach double-digits, led by Jackie Ventricelli, who netted a game-high 30 points on just 9 of 21 shooting from the floor but converted 4 of 9 from the outside and 8 of 11 from the free-throw line, in nearly playing the full forty minutes, Ventricelli added a game-leading seven steals and grabbed four rebounds.

Shannon Burns tallied 10 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the field while Jada Thompson was limited to just 3 of 14 shooting for nine points but pulled down a game-best 15 rebounds and team-leading four helpers for the Roadrunners.

The two teams struggled in the early portion of the contest with the visitors holding on to a 5-2 lead following a layup from Ventricelli. The scored remained that way for nearly five minutes until Thompson pushed Ramapo ahead, 7-2, on a layup.

The Bloodhounds got back into the contest, staging a 7-3 run that was capped by a strong left-handed layup from Zeolla off the feed from Ayanna Edwards that made it 10-9 in favor of the visitors. Carley Martin drilled a jumper with two seconds left that gave Ramapo a three-point lead, 12-9.

The Bloodhounds kept it close in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 12-9 over a six-minute span, as Kelly hit her second three-pointer of the night to tie the game at 21. Ramapo closed out the first half with four straight points, as Ventricelli made one of two from the line as the Roadrunners claimed a 25-21 halftime lead.

John Jay opened the second half with a quick bucket from Ruberto off the feed from Hammond that made it 25-23. Ramapo went ahead by five, 32-27, at the 6:29 mark, after Ventricelli made both of her attempts from the line.

The Bloodhounds responded quickly as Kelly dialed up her third trifecta of the evening as Edwards spotted her on the wing that chipped the Ramapo lead down to two, 32-30. The visitors pushed their advantage to six, 37-31, as Ventricelli converted one of two from the line with 3:40 remaining in the quarter.

Kelly continued her torrid shooting from long range, making her fourth triple with 2:54 showing on the clock that made it 37-34. The Bloodhounds continued to chip away at the lead, as Zeolla drew the contact on Burns and muscled in the layup before completing the three-point play at the line that knotted the game at 37.

Ramapo closed out the quarter on a mini 6-2 outburst with Ventricllei netting all the points in the 90-second span but Ruberto was able to thwart the run with a layup in the closing moments of the quarter as John Jay trialed 43-39.

The fourth quarter began with Bogle connecting on a pair of mid-range jumpers that tied the game at 43. On the ensuing Ramapo possession, Olivia Johnstone connected on a three-pointer before Kelly answered right back with a three of her own, the fifth of the evening, tying the game at 46.

Zeolla once again thrived for the Bloodhounds in the post, as the Yorktown Heights, NY native powered in a layup while getting fouled and hitting on the subsequent free-throw, that gave John Jay a one-point lead, 49-48, at the 7:04 mark.

Bogle missed on a jumper but soared across the lane and gathered the loose ball and hit one in off the back iron that pushed the Bloodhounds lead to three, 51-48, with 5:39 left to go in regulation. Leading by one, 51-50, Hammond received the ball in the corner, in front of her team's bench, and hoisted a high-arcing hree-pointer that swished home, much to the delight of her teammates as the Bloodhounds went ahead by four, 54-50.

Over the next 2:30, both Zeolla and Burns were at the forefront of their team's offense, as they each scored four points, as the Bloodhounds stayed ahead by four, 58-54, with 2:41 left to play. Sheeley hit on a jumper that narrowed the deficit, but Hammond converted on one of the biggest shots of the evening, a second three-pointer that increased the Bloodhounds lead to five, 61-56, with over two minutes remaining. Ventricelli hit the final points of the night to secure her 30-point effort but it wasn't enough as John Jay picked up their second straight win over the Roadrunners in back-to-back seasons.

Collectively, the Bloodhounds shot 41.7 percent from the floor, highlighted by hitting on 62.5 percent in the fourth quarter alone (10 of 16 | 3 of 3 from three-point range). John Jay hit on 7 of 9 from long distance while the Roadrunners were held to just 5 of 15 marksmanship from the outside. The Bloodhounds cleaned up on the boards, 49-37, which included grabbing 37 defensive rebounds.

The game featured five lead changes and fives ties with the Bloodhounds scoring exactly half of their points (32) from inside the paint.
