Rifle Concludes First Weekend Of 2023-24 Season

Northfield, VT | Cambridge, MA - The John Jay rifle team opened the 2023-24 season with a slew of matches against Norwich University on Saturday and MIT/SUNY Plattsburgh on Sunday.

The Bloodhounds fell to Norwich, 1899-2060, in smallbore and 2115-2143 in airgun. On Sunday, John Jay dropped a 2021-2162 decision to MIT in smallbore and 2183-2238 in airgun.

The Bloodhounds earned their first two wins of the season against SUNY Plattsburg, earning 2021-2008 victory in smallbore and 2183-2042 in airgun as the MIT match was the Bloodhounds' postal match against the Cardinals.

Danny Canning led the way for John Jay in both smallbore and airgun in both disciplines. Her 581 airgun score at MIT was the top score for both teams and her second-best mark in her Bloodhound career.

Rochelle Redwood fired a personal-best 496 in smallbore at Norwich and followed up with a 541 in airgun at MIT. Bryan Gomez hit a personal-best in both guns at MIT with a 486 smallbore and 518 in airgun.

Coach's Corner | Head Coach Tom White"Two of our top four shooters didn't attend so we incorporated two new shooters - Kaitlyn Ayers and Evelyn Mendez. Mendez shot airgun for us on both days and did very well, shooting scores abover her pratice averages while gaining valuable experience shooting on both traditional paper targets at Norwich and electronic targets at MIT.

Kaitlyn came out of nowhere ad became our second best shooter in both disciplines this past weekend. I coulnd not be more thrilled about how well she shot. When she joined us just one month ago, she had no previous shooting exsperience and had never seen a competition rifle. In a few short weekes, she has skyrocketed in her practice scores and performed exceptionally well. Her scorers were far above what I expected and excited about how much better she will shoot in the next few matches.

The Bloodhounds will be in action on November 17 as they will take on Maritime in Mount Vernon, NY at the Mount Vernon Rifle Range.
