Women's Basketball Falters In CUNYAC Opener At Brooklyn On Friday Evening

Brooklyn, NY - A tightly-contested first half set the stage for CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) lid-lifter and rematch of the last two CUNYAC Championships between the John Jay women's basketball and the Brooklyn College Bulldogs on Friday evening. 
 
A 13-6 run midway through the third quarter proved to be the difference, as the Bloodhounds dropped the conference opener, 74-60, at the West Quad Gymnasium.
 
With the setback, John Jay falls to 5-3; 0-1 CUNYAC on the year while the Brooklyn moves to 4-2; 1-0 CUNYAC. 
 
Two Bloodhounds reached double-figures in the contest, led by junior guard Ashley Zeolla, who scored a team-high 17 points on 5 of 14 shooting, which also included a 7 of 9 shooting spree from the free-throw line. The Yorktown Heights, NY native also pulled in six rebounds while adding an assist and a steal in her 33 minutes of play. 
 
Graduate guard Kamryn Hammond registered her fifth double-double of the season and seventh as a Bloodhound as she finished with 14 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds. The Poughkeepsie, NY native dished out a season's best six assist while logging 38 minutes of play. 
 
Newcomer Michaela Lattimore added career-high contributed a career-best eight points, six rebounds, and two steals in her 14 minutes of action. 
 
Brooklyn had three player score in double-digits as Alina Estrella notched a game-high 21 points on 9 of 17 shooting while adding eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals in 34 minutes. 
 
Erica James scored 17 points on 7 of 14 shooting while grabbing five rebounds, swiping four steals and added a block and an assist in 27 minutes. 
 
Sarah James finished with a double-double, concluding the contest with 11 points on 2 of 8 shooting while tying for the team-lead with 12 rebounds, as did Anna Kitch (11 defensive rebounds and seven points). 
 
Hammond opened the contest with a three-pointer off the feed from Zeolla before Estrella put Brooklyn on the board with a layup. 
 
The two teams traded points for much of the stanza with Hannah Ruberto knotting the score at 16 after a crafty, under-handed layup at the 2:09 mark of the quarter. 
 
Zeolla made the backend of a two-shot foul that put John Jay up one, 17-16, with 48 seconds before Ayomide Adeoye converted on a layup just before buzzer sounded. 
 
Brooklyn opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run, capped by an Estrella layup that pushed the lead up to 24-17. Zeolla powered her way in the paint to stop the run off the pass from Sarah Granados at the 6:59 mark. 
 
The Bloodhounds scored seven of the next 12 points over a near five-minute span, to cut the deficit to just three, following a layup from Lattimore. 
 
Suliat Afolabi hit a three for the Bulldogs to increase the lead to six, 32-26, before Estrella ended the quarter with a layup as Brooklyn went into the break up eight.
 
Commencing the third quarter, the two teams went back and forth with a pair of points as Zeolla's jumper brought the visitors to within eight, 38-30. 
 
The Bulldogs ignited a 9-2 run over the next three minutes in building a 47-32 advantage, capped by a layup from Kitch. 
 
The Bloodhounds closed out the quarter outscoring Brooklyn, 9-7, but the home team held a 13-point lead, 54-41, heading into the fourth. 
 
Brooklyn opened the fourth quarter on a 13-2 run, with Sarah James netting nine of the 13 points during the 2:15 run as the Bulldogs went up 67-43 with 6:53 left in regulation. 
 
Hammond dialed up a three-pointer for the visitors that helped John Jay close out the contest on a 14-7 outburst in which the Bloodhounds converted on 5 of 8 from the field, but Brooklyn held on for the win. 
 
John Jay finished the contest shooting 34.4 percent from the field (21 of 61) while Brooklyn hit on 36.6 percent (26 of 71). 
 
Both teams struggled from the outside, combing to go 7 of 40 with John Jay holding Brooklyn to just 4 of 26 from deep (15.4 percent). 
 
The Bulldogs held a 50-40 edge on the board while doubling up the Bloodhounds on the offensive glass, 18-9. 
 
The rematch of the last two CUNYAC finals featured a total of 18 lead changes and two ties.
 
The Bloodhounds return home to the Doghouse on Monday, December 4, as they will host Sarah Lawrence at 7:00 p.m.
