Women's Basketball Close Out 2023 Regular Season With 87-34 Road Triumph At Baruch

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team closed out the 2022-23 regular season with a 87-34 road triumph at Baruch on Tuesday evening. 
 

 
With the win, the Bloodhounds finish with an overall record of 17-8 and 11-3 mark in the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). The Bearcats conclude the year at 14-11 and 8-6 in league play. 
 
"An extremely efficient game from start to finish that propelled us to the road win," commented head coach Lynda Day. "Ashley (Zeolla) got us off to a fast start and Katie (Healy) helped keep the pace. Ayanna (Edwards) has continued to give us valuable minutes off the bench, which helps lift everyone." 
 
John Jay will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Tournament, earning a first-round bye. The Bloodhounds will await the winner of the 3/6 matchup on February 22. Time to be announced. 
 
"The goal is always to position ourselves in the best possible position to make a deep run in the playoffs," added Day. "As we await to see who we play in the semifinals, we are confident that we will come out with great energy that is back by our amazing fans." 
 
Three Bloodhounds finished in double-figures, led by Ashley Zeolla, who poured in a game-high 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting. The Yorktown Heights, NY native added eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks in her 19 minutes of action. 
 
Katie Healy registered 18 points on a 8 of 12 shooting display while pulling down six rebounds in her 26 minutes of play. 
 
Chayanne Kelly was the third Bloodhound in double-figures, scoring 12 points in 16 minutes on 5 of 6 from the floor and 2 of 3 from three-point range. 
 
Allison Altamirano led the way for the Bearcats with eight points on just 3 of 8 shooting. Sophia Encarnacion tallied six points. 
 
Both teams traded baskets early in the contest until the Bloodhounds seized control of the momentum, outscoring the Bearcats, 18-4, over the final six minutes in taking a 22-8 lead. 
 
John Jay converted on 8 of 14 from the field during the run with Zeolla scoring six of the 18 points. 
 
The visitors continued to fire on all cylinders, sparking a brief 7-2 outburst that extended the lead to 29-10 after Healy converted one of two from the line. 
 
John Jay limited Baruch to just two made buckets over the final five minutes of the second quarter, while hitting on 5 of 9 attempts from the floor as they entered the break with a 41-16 lead. 
 
The Bloodhounds shot a blistering 48.6 percent from the field in the opening half while holding the Bearcats to just 21.2 (7 of 33). 
 
John Jay held a 32-18 advantage on the boards, highlighted by a 19-10 edge on the defensive glass. 
 
The Bloodhounds opened the third quarter on 20-4 run that increased the lead to 61-20 following a Zeolla layup at the 4:47 mark of the frame before Altamirano halted the run with a three-pointer. 
 
John Jay scored six of the final nine points in the stanza, as the visitors took a 67-26 lead after Jordyn Ruiz hit on the mid-range jumper off the feed from Kelly. 
 
An 8-0 run commenced the fourth quarter for the Bloodhounds, capped by a Kelly layup after getting the pass from Natalie Simonds
 
Kelly's three-pointer at the 4:26 mark extended the lead to 80-29, as Victoria Brown spotted Kelly for the triple. 
 
John Jay scored seven of the final 12 points to clinch their 17th overall triumph of the season. 
 
The Bloodhounds outmuscled the Bearcats, 56-31, on the boards, highlighted by a 40-19 mark on the defensive glass. 
 
For the game, John Jay shot 56.5 percent from the field while limiting the home team to just 21.5 percent shooting (14 of 65).
