Women's Basketball Garners Wire-To-Wire Road Win At CCNY On Friday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team commenced Friday's road contest with a strong start and didn't look back, defeating CCNY, 84-31, in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). 
 
With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 14-9 overall and 8-3 in the league while the Beavers fall to 4-17 and 2-9 in the conference. 
 

 
"A high powered first quarter set the tone for us this evening," commented head coach Lynda Day. "We got great minutes from Victoria (Brown) and our bench tonight, in particular Natalie (Simonds) and Gillian (Powell) gave us important minutes and helped us preserve the lead."
 
All nine Bloodhounds that suited up scored in the contest, with four players reaching double-figures on the night, led by Katie Healy's game-high 22 points. 
 
The Merrick, NY native registered her 59th career double-double in the contest, pulling down 19 rebounds after she hit on 11 of 16 from the floor. She filled up the stat sheet, dishing out six assist and recording a team-high five steals in her 29 minutes of action. 
 
Victoria Brown netted a season-high 12 points in her 34 minutes of action. The Brooklyn, NY native was one rebound shy of a double-double, as she finished with nine while adding four assists and two steals. 
 
Kamryn Hammond and Ashley Zeolla each finished with 10 points and six rebounds in the contest. Hammond distributed four helpers while Zeolla added three. Jordyn Ruiz scored points while helping out on the boards as well, corralling seven boards and match Healy with six assists.
 
The Bloodhounds got 24 points from their bench, as Natalie Simonds contributed nine points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. 
 
Gillian Powell chipped in seven points and five rebounds in 22 minutes of play. Chayanne Kelly netted six points on 3 of 5 shooting while Ayanna Edwards netted two points while grabbing three rebounds and dishing out two assists. 
 
CCNY was paced by Fatoumata Nantoume's 11 points, hitting on 4 of 11 from the field and 3 of 5 from three-point range in her 25 minutes of action.
 
Monae Laing contributed nine points and seven rebounds while Kasia Morrison tallied eight points. 
 
The Bloodhounds limited CCNY to just a 2 of 12 start in the opening quarter while converting on 14 of 22 form the field in building a 25-point lead at 29-4. 
 
The trio of Healy, Brown, and Ruiz combined to net 22 of the first 29 points for the visitors as John Jay closed out the first quarter on a 12-4 run. 
 
The Bloodhounds carried that momentum into the second quarter, opening the stanza on a 12-0 run, with five different players combining to go 5 of 6 from the field over the four-minute span as Victoria Brown capped the run with a pair of made free-throws that made it 41-4. 
 
John Jay tallied eight of the final 12 points in the frame in upping their lead to 41 (49-8). 
 
In the opening half, John Jay shot nearly 60.0 percent from the field while holding a 30-13 edge on the boards. 
 
The Bloodhounds opened the third with an 8-2 run to extend their lead to 57-10 after Hammond hit on her layup before closing out the quarter scoring 12 of the final 17 points. 
 
CCNY outscored John Jay, 16-15, in the fourth quarter, with Nantoume and Morrison combing to score 11 of the 16 points. 
 
John Jay outmuscled CCNY on the boards, 61-31. The Bloodhounds stifling defense forced 26 turnovers leading to 25 points as John Jay recorded 18 steals in the contest. 
 
The Bloodhounds will be back in action on Wednesday, February 8, as they will head to the Bronx to tangle with Lehman College at 5:30 p.m.
