Women's Basketball Stellar Season Concludes In ECAC Tournament First Round At William Paterson, Falls 63-60

Wayne, NJ - The John Jay women's basketball team, playing in their first ECAC postseason contest since 2007, held a two-point advantage at halftime, but the William Paterson Pioneers staged a comeback and was able to fend off a surging Bloodhounds comeback, as the No. 6 seed John Jay fell 63-60 to the No. 3 seed Pioneers.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds finish the 2023 season with an 18-10 overall record and finished CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play with an 11-3 mark.

William Paterson moves to 16-11 on the season and will advance to the next round where they will square off against the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights.

Seniors Bobbi Green and Katie Healy each recorded a double-double on the evening. For Green, she finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds while adding a team-leading five assists in her 33 minutes of action.

Healy also notched 14 points while she corralled 10 rebounds while adding three assists and led the way with three steals in a team-high 37 minutes.

Three Pioneers finished in double-figures, led by Renee Wells, who led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed a game-best 16 rebounds, 12 of which coming on the defensive end.

Victoria Palladino added 14 points in, six of which coming at the free-throw line in her 36 minutes of play while Justina Cabezas contributed 11 points.

Both teams struggled in the early portion of the contest to find their rhythm from the field after Green started the contest with a layup. After Ashley Zeolla muscled in a layup and completed the three-point play, WPU answered with a 8-3 run, taking a slim 8-7 led on a Wells three-pointer.

The Bloodhounds held a 11-10 lead after the first quarter as Green buried a mid-range jumper at the 2:52 mark before Allison McBride converted on a layup a minute later.

The momentum of the contest was evenly matched in the second quarter with both teams trading baskets over the first five minutes of the frame after Palladino hit on both her attempts from the free-throw line that gave William Paterson a 23-22 edge.

John Jay took their largest lead of the game, 28-23, with 1:39 to go before halftime as Green banked in the layup chance. The Pioneers went on to score five of the next seven points but it was the Bloodhounds that held a 30-28 lead as Green reached double-figures first with 10 points.

The Pioneers staged a 15-6 run over a 4:38 span that saw their lead increase to 45-38 after Brianna Smith was able to convert on the right-handed layup.

The Bloodhounds used a quick 6-0 run to trim the deficit to one, 45-44, after Chayanne Kelly corralled the offensive rebound and alertly go back up for two. William Paterson closed out the quarter with six of the final eight points to lead by five, 51-46.

In the final quarter, it was the Pioneers controlling the tempo, outscoring John Jay, 10-6, as they went ahead by nine on a Cabezas left-elbow jumper with 3:18 left to play.

That didn't deter the Bloodhounds, who responded with a 8-0 run over the next two minutes to get to within one, 61-60, following a Green layup and an immediate timeout by the visitors.

Holding on to the one-point lead following a timeout, the Pioneers tried to keep the ball away from the Bloodhounds, but time stopped with 11 seconds after a foul was called on Ayanna Edwards

Palladino hit both chances from the line, extending the lead to three, 63-60, as John Jay called for time to advance the ball into the frontcourt.

When play resumed following the brief timeout, the Bloodhounds had two looks to tie the game as Kelly, who tapped into her comeback thriller against Brooklyn in the CUNYAC Championships a week ago, misfired on the first shot, but followed her shot and got a second chance, but attempt was offline as the Pioneers held on for the win.

Both teams shot 36 percent from the field while the Bloodhounds were held to just 10.0 percent shooting from three-point range (1 of 10). John Jay held a 49-38 edge on the boards, highlighted by a 16-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
