Softball Splits First Day Of Action At Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

Naples, FL - The John Jay softball team commenced their first day at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Friday, earning a 6-0 win over Clark before falling to Drew, 5-2, in the second game. 
 
Game 1 - John Jay 6, Clark 0
Jailen Santiago pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout in guiding the Bloodhounds to their first win of the season. Santiago finished with eight strikeouts while issuing three walks. 
 
Jordyn Prince and Rylea Sandel each had two hits with Prince scoring two of the six runs. Sandel drove in a pair of RBIs. Kelly Fajardo and Prince drove in an RBI. 
 
Felicia Salvati collected two hits while Samantha Crowley had the other hit for the Cougars. 
 
Prince led off the game for the Bloodhounds with a single to short and moved quickly into scoring position. Sandel reached on a bunt single to first, scoring Prince. 
 
Following a scoreless second, the Bloodhounds tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third, to go up 3-0. 
 
Maleea Gallaspy reached on a hit by pitch before Sandel singled through the right side and later scored on a fielding error. 
 
John Jay scored two more times in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the lead to 5-0. Elika Rodrigues reached on a infield single to short before immediately stealing second. Prince laced a single back up the middle, plating Rodrigues before coming into score on a RBI grounder by Sandel.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Fajardo singled down the left field line that plated home Sidney Bankston, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. 
 
Santiago worked a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to earn her first win of the season. 
 
Game 2 - John Jay 2, Drew 5
 
Drew kicked off the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, as Madi Precht legged out an infield single to start the inning off for the Rangers. 
 
She stole second and came around to score on a RBI base hit from Zoey Shimp, giving Drew a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Haley Meierhofer, singled to right field, bringing in Shimp, as the Rangers went ahead 2-0. 
 
The Bloodhounds rallied to tie the game in the top of the second. Bankston reached on a single to short. Fajardo singled to left and advanced to second on the throw but Bankston was out at third on the throw from the left fielder. 
 
Mackenzie Tresch singled home Fajardo as John Jay got on the board. The next batter, Elika Rodrigues, sent a hard-hit single to right plating home Tresch, to tie the game at 2-2. 
 
The game remained knotted until the bottom of the third as Precht scored on a wild pitch as Drew regained the lead, 3-2. 
 
The Rangers added two more scores in the bottom of the fourth. Amanda Novak was hit by a pitch to lead off the Drew fourth inning. Precht drew a walk. Novak and Precht executed a double steal with Novak sliding in just before the tag, giving Drew, a 4-2 advantage. 
 
Shimp reached on a fielding error and moved to second while Precht came around to score, giving the Rangers a three-run lead as Drew held on for the win. 
 
Jailene Santiago and Rodrigues had two hits apiece for the Bloodhounds, with Rodrigues and Tresch driving in RBIs for John Jay. 
 
The Bloodhounds will be back in action on Saturday morning, as they will take on SUNY Brockport at 9:00 am followed by a 1:00 pm first-pitch against Mitchell.
