Softball Posts A Pair Of Late-Inning Rallies In Wins Over SUNY Brockport And Mitchell On Saturday

Naples, FL - The John Jay softball team swept the second day of competition at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in dramatic fashion, defeating SUNY Brockport, 11-10, in game one and following up the triumph with a 7-6 walk-off win over Mitchell. 
 
With the wins, the Bloodhounds move to 3-3 on the season. 
 

 
Game 1 - John Jay 11, SUNY Brockport 10
Five Bloodhounds finished with multi-hit games, with Jordyn Prince and Rylea Sandel each recording three hits. 
 
Maleea Gallaspy, Kelly Fajardo, and Mackenzie Tresch each collected two hits with Gallaspy driving in a team-high four RBIs.
 
Six Brockport starters collected two hits in the contest with Olivia Hayden, Jodie Burdick and Kellie Gentile each driving in two RBIs. 
 
Brockport got on the board first as Burdick sent a single to right that plated home Riley Barrett. 
 
The Bloodhounds erupted for five runs in their half of the second Jailene Santiago led off the second with a single to left and moved to second on a wild pitch. 
 
With one out in the inning, Tresch sent a single up the middle, giving the Bloodhounds runners on the corner. Rodrigues came up and sent a single to right as Santiago crossed the plate to tie the game at one. 
 
Prince followed with a base hit that plated Tresch, giving John Jay their first lead of the contest. Gallaspy added a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the third run of the stanza. 
 
Angelina Schoelles connected on a double down the left field line, scoring Prince before Sidney Bankston sent a single to left, as Sandel crossed the plate, capping the five-run innings. 
 
Brockport got a run back in the bottom half as Amanda Blakely roped a RBI single up the middle, scoring Victoria Angelo. 
 
Fajardo led off with a double before moving to third in the top of the third and later came into score off a wild pitch. 
 
The score remained that way until the Golden Eagles sparked a five-run bottom of the fourth in taking 7-6 lead, as Hayden singled up the middle, plating a pair of runners, trimming the deficit to 6-4. 
 
Gentile added an RBI single to left, which brought in Hayden, before Burdick came into score on a wild pitch, tying the game at 6-6. Gentile notched the go-ahead run, scoring on a throwing error, as Brockport took a 7-6 lead. 
 
Gallaspy reached on a one-out single in the top of the sixth before Sandel continued her hot hitting, tripling to right center, which knotted the score at 7-7. 
 
Brockport pulled ahead, 10-7, following two straight RBI singles from Burdick and Gentile before Caitlyn Dailey delivered a RBI single, making it 10-7. 
 
In the top of the seventh, Fajardo and Tresch drew back-to-back walks with one out in the inning. 
 
Prince recorded another hit, singling to left field, which loaded the bases for Gallaspy. Gallaspy promptly unloaded a double to left center, clearing the bases as John Jay knotted the game at 10. 
 
The next batter, Sandel, ripped a RBI single, scoring the go-ahead run in Gallaspy, as the Bloodhound retook the lead, 11-10. 
 
Santiago struck out Blakely for the first out before inducing two straight ground balls, ending the game as the Bloodhounds secured the win. 
 
Game 2 - John Jay 7, Mitchell 6 
The Bloodhounds faced an early 5-0 deficit, after Mitchell capped off the rally with three runs in the top of the fourth, capped by a two-run single from Sarah Aviles. 
 
John Jay responded back with a five-run inning of their own, tying the game in the bottom of the fifth. 
 
Elika Rodrigues reached first on a fielding error from Mitchell's second baseman. Prince reached on an infield single, giving the Bloodhounds runners on the corner with no outs. 
 
Gallaspy sent a towering fly ball to right that was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing Rodrigues to score John Jay's first run of the contest. 
 
Schoelles laced a single to left, plating home Prince before Bankston reached first on an error, allowing Schoelles and Gallaspy to score, trimming the deficit to one, 5-4. Fajardo reached on a fielder's choice, which brought home Bankston, tying the game at 5-5.
 
The score remained knotted at five until the top of the seventh, when Mitchell went ahead by one, 6-5, thanks to a Brooke Whitmarsh double to left center. 
 
The Bloodhounds would have to rally, just like in their first game. Bankston led off the seventh with a walk. 
 
Santiago roped a double that brought in Bankston, tying the game at 6-6. Fajardo followed suit with a double to left, moving the potential winning run to third in Bankston. 
 
The next batter, Tresch, reached first on an error by the shortstop as Logan Stansfield, who pinch-ran for Santiago, came in to score, as John Jay completed the two-game sweep. 
 
Schoelles and Santiago each had three hits while Fajardo added two hits. Bankston drove in two RBIs. Santiago earned the win.
 
John Jay concludes their time in Florida on Sunday morning, as they will take on William Paterson at 9:00 AM followed by an 11:00 am first-pitch against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
