Softball Splits Final Day Of Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic; Finishes 4-2 In Florida

Naples, FL - The John Jay softball team wrapped up their six-game schedule at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Sunday morning, splitting the day against William Paterson (lost, 10-0) and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (won, 16-8). 
 
The Bloodhounds move to 4-4 on the season 
 
Game 1 - John Jay 0, William Paterson 10
The John Jay Bloodhounds opened their final day in Florida against William Paterson. 
 
The Pioneers scored first as Carly McDaniel brought in Anna Nunziato from first base on a hard-hit single. 
 
William Paterson added one more in the top of the second as Gianna Mulato connected on an RBI single to right. 
 
The Pioneers increased their lead to 6-0 thanks to a four-run fourth as McDaniel sent a hard-hit grounder that plated two runners before a hit-by-pitch to Delaney Sullivan and a walk to Kilee Oertel gave them the six-run lead. 
 
William Paterson added four more runs in the top of the sixth as the Pioneers closed out the game. 
 
Angelina Schoelles led the way for the Bloodhounds with two hits. Rylea Sandel added the other hit for John Jay. 
 
Anna Nunziato and Jasmine Vera each had two hits and scored two runs while McDaniel drove in three RBIs. 
 
Game 2 - John Jay 16, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 8
 
The Bloodhounds produced their highest-run total of the season in the finale of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, defeating Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), 16-8. 
 
Six of the nine starters recorded multi-hits in the finale, as Maleea Gallaspy, Schoelles and Elika Rodrigues registered three hits. Schoelles, Rodrigues and Jailene Santiago drove in three RBIs while Rodrigues and Gallaspy scored three runs. 
 
Santiago collected her fourth win of the season. Hailey Peabody and Madyson Torres collected two hits for the Trailblazers while Madison Teta, Lidia Flores, and Ezmeralda Albright each drove in two RBIs. 
 
The two teams traded runs in the opening inning as Schoelles delivered a two-out RBI single that scored Gallaspy. 
 
The Trailblazers evened the score in the bottom half, as Flores reached on a fielding error, which enabled Peabody to score. 
 
The Bloodhounds sparked a five-run third inning, taking a 6-1 lead. Two straight hits by Rylea Sandel and Schoelles set the table for Santiago, who broke the tie with a double to right field. Two batters later, Kelly Fajardo reached on a fielding error by the first baseman, scoring Schoelles. 
 
Rodrigues connected on a two-run RBI single that made it 5-1 before coming into score on a passed ball, making it 6-1. 
 
MCLA got one back in the bottom half as Flores continued to be the catalyst for the Trailblazers, sending a RBI single to center. 
 
The Trailblazers scored six runs in their half of the fourth, taking a 8-6 lead. Albright ripped an 0-2 single to left field, plating two runners. Abby Bird brought in Albright with a single to left field. 
 
The next batter, Teta, clubbed a two-run home run to right field, as MCLA went up 7-6 before Torres sent an RBI single to short, upping their lead to 8-6. 
 
John Jay responded in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs in regaining the lead, 10-8. Rodrigues sent a single to center field that closed the gap to one, 8-7. 
 
Jordyn Prince brought in Rodrigues with a hard-hit single to centerfield, tying the game at 8-8. Gallaspy sent a first-pitch double to left, keeping the rally going before Sandel was intentionally walked. 
 
Schoelles came through with a single to left, scoring Prince, as John Jay regained the lead at 9-8 before Santiago hit a hard grounder to second, which allowed Gallaspy to cross the plate. 
 
The Bloodhounds tacked on six more runs in the top of the sixth as Miranda Perez capped the big inning with a two-run single to right field. 
 
Following the 4-2 finish in Florida, the Bloodhounds will stay on the road, as they will travel to Baltimore, MD on March 18 to square off against Notre Dame of Maryland University. 
 
First-pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
