Softball Notches Split At Notre Dame Of Maryland On Saturday Afternoon; Defeats Gators In Extra Innings In Game Two

Dundalk, MD - The John Jay softball team came away with a split of Saturday's non-conference road tilt at Notre Dame of Maryland University. 
 
The Bloodhounds were edged in game one, 9-8, before scoring three runs in the top of the eighth, defeating the Gators, 7-4. John Jay moves their record to 5-5 on the season while Notre Dame of Maryland falls to 1-7. 
 
Game 1 - John Jay 8, Notre Dame of Maryland University 9 
John Jay faced a three-run deficit after one inning of play before responding with four runs over the next two innings, claiming a 4-3 advantage, thanks to a pair of home runs. With one out, Maleea Gallaspy clubbed her first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field that brought the Bloodhounds to within one, 3-2. Following a two-out single to center field off the bat of Rylea Sandel, Jailene Santiago connected on a two-run shot, also to left field, as the Bloodhounds took the lead. 

The Gators sparked a four-run bottom of the third, retaking the lead at 7-4. Jessie Leatherwood produced a game-tying RBI single. Later in the frame, Lilyian Hafner broke the stalemate, scoring on a wild pitch that made it 5-4. Emily Bonnett pushed the lead to two, 6-4, on a sacrifice fly to that brought in Leatherwood before Candace Forgach-Aguilar plated home the fourth run of the frame on a RBI single back up the middle, giving NDMU a 7-4 advantage. 
 
The Bloodhounds started to chip into the Gators lead, as in the top of the fourth, Kelly Fajardo came into score, cutting the deficit down to two, 7-5. NDMU added two more runs in their half of the fourth, building back a four-run cushion, as Miranda Burton ripped a double to right center before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Leatherwood. 
 
The Bloodhounds mounted a late comeback, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to close the gap to 9-8. Fajardo drew a one out walk before moving into scoring position on an infield single by Mackenzie Tresch

Jordyn Prince singled to left which loaded the bases for Gallaspy. Gallaspy connected on a hard-hit single to left field, bringing in both Fajardo and Tresch, making it a 9-7 contest before Prince came home on a wild pitch that made it a one-run lead for the Gators.  The Bloodhounds couldn't bring in Santiago, who reached on a one-out single to center as they fell in the opener.

Prince led the way for the Bloodhounds with three hits while Gallaspy went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Santiago went 3 for 4 while driving in two RBIs.  Jogelys Sanchez was saddled with the loss after going two innings, giving up six runs on four hits. 

Gena Donalds picked up the win for Gators, tossing four innings while giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits. Burton and Hafner each registered two hits while Burton and Leatherwood each drove in two RBIs. 


 
Game 2 - John Jay 7, Notre Dame of Maryland University 4 
The Bloodhounds salvaged the split of Saturday's twinbill. Prince and Gallaspy had back-to-back singles to start the contest. 
 
With one out, Santiago drew a walk that loaded the bases for Sandel. Sandel promptly uncorked a single through the right side that brought in both Prince and Gallaspy, as John Jay claimed the early two-run lead. 
 
Following a scoreless second, the Bloodhounds went back to work, adding two more runs in their half of the third as Santiago double to right center, bringing in Gallaspy who led off the frame with a single making it 3-0. 
 
The next batter, Sandel, drove in her third RBI of the afternoon, lacing a double to right field that scored Santiago. 
 
The Gators cracked through with their first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth as Bethani Newbold singled and moved to third after scoring Leatherwood, who reached on a two-out walk. 
 
In the bottom of the sixth, NDMU scored three runs on four hits, with Scarlet Miller started the inning by singling up the middle. Burton than singled and advanced to third, scoring Miller making it 4-2. 
 
Hafner singled in Burton making it 4-3 before Newbold plated home Hafner with a single to centerfield, tying the game at 4-4. 
 
Both teams headed for extra innings as the Bloodhounds capitalized on their chance in the top of the eighth. 
 
Santiago doubled to center field that plated home Angelina Schoelles, giving John Jay a 5-4 lead before Sandel collected her fourth RBI, tripling home Santiago, making it 6-4. With two-out, Tresch singled back up the middle that scored Sandel, making it 7-4. 
 
Santiago gave up leadoff single to Burton as the Gators had runners on the corner. Santiago got Hafner to fly out to left and Prince alertly fired a strike home, getting Miller out trying to score. Santiago struck out Leatherwood looking to preserve the victory for the Bloodhounds. 

Sandel led the way for the Bloodhounds, going 3 for 4 while driving in four of the seven RBIs.  Gallaspy and Santiago each had two hits with Santiago recording two RBIs. Santiago earned her fifth win of the season, going the full eight innings in which she gave up four runs (two earned) on eight hits while walking three and striking out nine. 

Burton and Newbold each had two hits for the Gators with Hafner and Newbold each driving an RBI. Leatherwood matched Santiago by going the full eight, as she gave up seven run (six earned) on ten hits while walking two and striking out nine. 


John Jay will host Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, March 21 at Randall's Island Softball Field 16 First-pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
