Jailene Santiago's Masterful Pitching Performance Guides Softball To Split Of Doubleheader Against Mount Saint Vincent

New York, NY - Graduate pitcher Jailene Santiago flirted with history in game two of the John Jay softball's doubleheader home tilt against the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins.

The Bloodhounds dropped the first game, 10-5, before Santiago fired off a complete game, two-hit, blanking the Dolphins, 7-0, in the nightcap of Tuesday's twinbill.

With the split, John Jay moves to 6-6 on the season while the Dolphins move to 7-5 on the season.

Game 1 - John Jay 5, CMSV 10
Santiago collected four hits while driving in two RBIs to pace the John Jay offense in the first contest. Jordyn Prince, Maleea Gallaspy and Rylea Sandel added two hits a piece with Gallaspy and Angelina Schoelles recording an RBI in the game.

Simone Caruso was one of three Dolphins to have multi-hits in the contest, as she along with Sierra Romero, and Jocelyn Vega finished with two hits. Caruso drove in a team-high three RBI while Savannah Autobee and Sabrina Colon had two RBIs.

Serena Duran earned the victory for CMSV, tossing 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out three.

Neveah Echevarria took the loss for the Bloodhounds, giving up four runs (three earned) over three innings of work.

The Bloodhounds struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Santiago led off the frame with a solo home run to left center field.

Mount Saint Vincent responded with four runs in their half of the third as Autobee brought home a pair on a RBI single before moving into scoring position herself.

John Jay narrowed the gap in the bottom of the frame, as Angelina Schoelles sent a sacrifice fly to center field to plate home Prince. Gallaspy came into score off a wild pitch, closing the gap to just one, 4-3.

The Dolphins batted around in the top of the sixth, scoring six times on just four hits, with Colon's double to center served as one of the biggest hits in the inning for the guest.

The Bloodhounds tried to chip away at the lead as Gallaspy sent a ground-rule double down the left field line that plated home Prince before she came around to score on a RBI single by Santiago, making it 10-5.

John Jay had two runners on but couldn't get them around to score as CMSV held on to take game one.

Game 2 - John Jay 7, CMSV 0
Santiago took the ball for the Bloodhounds in game two and the graduate transfer enjoyed a stellar performance from inside the circle.

The Bloodhounds nearly batted around in the opening frame, as Gallaspy ripped a laser down the left field for a triple with one out. The ball got away from the CMSV catcher, allowing Gallaspy to score what turned out to be a trio of wild pitches that plated home two Bloodhound runs.

Kelly Fajardo singled through the right side for the fifth hit in the inning, scoring Sidney Bankston, making it 4-0.

The Bloodhounds went up by six on the two-run RBI single from Prince, who scored Bankston and Fajardo.

Santiago flirted with a potential no-hitter in the top of the fifth, as Autobee sent a hard-hit grounder in the hole but Sandel was able to make the diving backhand stop and firing across the diamond for the first out.

John Jay tacked on their final run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth in the form of Sandel, who singled and advanced to second on the throw, plating home Schoelles to make 7-0. The Bloodhounds narrowly made it 8-0 but Stansfield was thrown out at the plate.

Kelly Murphy reached on a throwing error from the Bloodhounds before she would get Romero to ground back her and strike out Vega. An 0-1 pitch proved to be handled by Caruso, who ripped a single to center and moved to third on the throw, snapping any of Santiago's chances to get a no-hitter.

Mila Gutierrez led off the final frame with a single before Colon struck out on six-pitches, as John Jay moved to a .500 record.

The Bloodhounds are slated to take on Yeshiva University in New Rochelle, NY at Flowers Park on March 24. First-pitch is set for 10:00 am.
