Softball Edged By Cairn, 5-4, In Ten Innings On Monday Afternoon; Game Two Not Played Due To Weather

Langhorne, PA -  Following a change in their schedule, the John Jay softball team traveled to Langhorne, PA to take on Cairn on Monday afternoon.

The two teams were pitted in a back-and-forth contest that needed extra innings to determine a winner, as the Bloodhounds held a 4-3 lead in the top of the tenth but Cairn walked it off with two runs in the bottom of the inning, edging John Jay, 5-4.

The second game of the doubleheader was not played due to inclement weather. With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 8-7 on the year while the Highlanders move to 4-7.

Mackenzie Tresch got the starting nod, going 3.2 innings allowing two unearned runs on three hits while walking four. Newly minted CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Player of the Week, Jailene Santiago, suffered just her second loss of the season, going 5.2 frames, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits while walking three and striking out six batters.

Jordyn Prince, Maleaa Gallaspy and Tresch each had two hits in the contest with Tresch driving in two RBIs for the visitors. Gallaspy and Kelly Fajardo each added an RBI in the contest.

Theresa Beck led the way for the Highlanders with two hits and was credited with three RBIs, two of which coming in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the tenth. Myiah Petroro, Abbi Heacock, and Sydney Wright all added a hit with Petroro scoring two of the five runs.

Kacey Wees earned her fourth victory of the season, pitching all ten innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits while walking five and striking out four batters.

The two teams were pitted in a stalemate over the first two innings before the Bloodhounds cracked through with the first runs of the contest.

With two outs, Prince ripped a hard-hit ball for a double. The next batter, Gallaspy, doubled to right center that brought in Prince to give John Jay a 1-0 lead. Angelina Schoelles walked to continue the frame but Santiago struck out swinging, ending the frame.

John Jay added to their lead in the top of the fourth, going ahead 2-0. Sidney Bankston sent a one out double to center. After moving up on the ground out by Fajardo, Tresch singled to center field, bringing in Bankston.

Cairn evened the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Beck led off with a double to center and moved to third on a wild pitch. A walk and an infield single to third, loaded the bases for Jolene Zefferi.

She reached on a fielder's choice that plated home Wright for the first run of the contest with Heacock advancing moving to third but coming into score on a throwing error by the Bloodhounds catcher.

John Jay had a chance in their half of the seventh to break the stalemate, as Schoelles reached on an error by the second baseman before Santiago reached on a fielder's choice. Rylea Sandel drew a walk but both runners were left stranded after Bankston struck out swinging.

Santiago was able to retire the Highlanders in order in their half of the seventh, as the game headed for extra innings.

With Bankston on second to start the frame, Fajardo advanced her to third on a well-executed sacrifice bunt. Tresch stepped up to the plate and brought in Bankston on a RBI single to right center, giving John Jay a 3-2 lead.

The Bloodhounds continued to rally in the inning, as Prince reached on a single up the middle, moving Tresch to second before both runners advanced a base on the wild pitch. Gallaspy grounded out to short to end the inning.

The Highlanders wasted little time in responding, as Jenna Kenyon placed a sacrifice bunt that advanced Petroro. The next batter, Beck, lofted a sacrifice fly to center field, as Petroro tagged up and scored on the play, knotting the game at 3-3.

Carin had a chance to win in in their half of the ninth. With two outs, Zefferi and Bruestle drew walks that loaded the bases for Shannon, who reached on a fielder's choice, but Zefferi was out at third due to interference.

In the top of the tenth, John Jay broke the tie, going up 4-3. Bankston placed a sacrifice bunt that moved Sandel to third. Fajardo then sent a hard-hit grounder to short, as Sandel crossed the plate and giving the Bloodhound the advantage.

In the bottom half of the inning, Petroro was hit by a pitch that gave the Highlanders two runners on. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Santiago was able to get Kenyon to pop out to third.

The next batter, Beck, ripped the game-winning double to left center as Petroro and Shannon scored, giving Cairn their fourth win of the season.
