Baseball Drops Midweek Road Contest At Rutgers-Newark On Tuesday Afternoon

Newark, NJ - The John Jay baseball team dropped its midweek non-conference road contest at Rutgers-Newark, falling to the Scarlet Raiders, 11-4, on Tuesday afternoon.

Anthony Agosta and Michael Mauro each collected two hits for the visitors with Mauro driving in two of the four RBIs in the game. John Spallin, Ethan Simaan, and David Michalski added a hit with Agosta and Michalski adding an RBI as well.

Ricky Gonzalez led the way at the plate for the Scarlet Raiders, going 3 for 3 with a run scored. Aidan Sheehan went 1 for 4 with two runs scored.

Rutgers-Newark got on the board first as Gilray Prial led off the game with a walk and came around to score on a wild pitch.

The Scarlet Raiders added three runs in their half of the second, as Sheehan reached on fielder's choice that brought in a pair before Michael Weinbel drew a bases loaded walk that plated the fourth Rutgers-Newark run.

The home team scored a run in their third, fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to increase their lead to 7-0.

The Bloodhounds rallied to chip into the lead, as Mauro delivered a two-run, RBI single back up the middle that plated both Agosta and Spallin. Following a single by Simaan, Michalski singled the left field line that brought in Mauro, as John Jay was within four at 7-3.

In the bottom half of the frame, Denny Furcal loftes a sacrifice fly to right that brought in Peter Cortez as Rutgers-Newark went ahead 8-3.

The home team added to its advantage with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, pushing the lead up to 10-3 following a sacrifice fly to left from Ethan Calcano. The final run for the Scarlet Raiders came on a wild pitch.

The Bloodhounds rallied to add a run in the top of the ninth, as Thomas Salerno and Joseph Salerno drew one out walks before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch.

Spallin followed suit with a walk of his own before Agosta laced a single through the left side that scored Thomas Salerno

The Bloodhounds will be back in action on Thursday, March 30, as they will welcome St. Joseph's University Brooklyn to Maimonides Park for a 6:30 p.m. first-pitch.
