Baseball Falls In Midweek Home Contest To St. Joseph's University Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay baseball team fell behind 8-1 entering the bottom of the fifth before scoring three runs in their half of the fifth and once more in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-5 but the visiting St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn Bears plated across six runs in the eighth to hold off the Bloodhounds, 16-7, on Thursday evening from Maimonides Park.

John Spallin and Michael Manzoeillo each had two hits in the contest for the Bloodhounds (2-20) with Spallin driving in two RBIs. David Michalski and Thomas Salerno each scored twice in the ballgame.

Chris Leary led the Bears with four hits while Lucas Collet drove in a team-leading four RBIs. Six St. Joseph's players had produced a multi-hit performance while four players drove in two or more RBIs, led by Collet.

Leary led off the contest with a double to left before moving to third on a fly out to right by Collet. The next batter, Michael Gardner, brought Leary in with an RBI single to left field, giving the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.

The Bears plated across five more runs in the top of the second to go up by six as Collet cleared the bases with a three-run double to right field before Gardner doubled him. Gardner came into score on a wild pitch.

The Bloodhounds got on the board in the bottom of the second. Ryan Kilcarr sent a one-out single to left center before Joseph Salerno drew a walk, giving John Jay a pair of runners on base. The next batter, Thomas Salerno, sent a grounder that brought in Kilcarr before both Salernos were retired.

The visitors added two more runs in the top of the fifth, pushing their lead to 8-1, after a sacrifice fly from Carmine Carbone and an RBI infield single off the bat of Leary.

John Jay cut the deficit in half, 8-4, thanks to a three-run bottom of the frame. Michael Mauro drew a walk before coming into score on a hard-hit triple from Ethan Simaan. A pair of walks to Kilcarr and Michalski loaded the bases for Saul Zoquier

The Bloodhound first baseman sent an infield single to short that scored Simaan before Thomas Salerno drew a bases loaded walk that ended Ryan Wnorowski's evening as John Jay trailed by four.

The home team inched closer in the bottom of the seventh. Thomas Salerno doubled down the left field before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Spallin walked and stole second but the overthrow by the SJUBK catcher sailed into centerfield, allowing Salerno to cross the plate.

John Jay continued the momentum as Mauro reached on an infield single to short to load the bases, but, all three Bloodhounds were stranded as Simaan was called out on strikes.
