Baseball Drops Twinbill At Lehman On Sunday Afternoon

Bronx, NY - The John Jay baseball team opened up CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader at Lehman College. The Bloodhounds dropped the first game, 18-4, before being edged out by the Lightning in game two, 16-13. 
 
Game 1 - John Jay 4, Lehman 18
John Spallin led the way for the Bloodhounds in game one, going 2 for 4 at the plate. Ethan Simaan plated home two RBIs while Michael Mauro and Saul Zoquier each added an RBI. 
 
Each of Lehman's starters had at least one hit in the contest with Elias Femin notching three hits and driving in four RBIs. Nomar Rijo added three RBIs while Ryan Rosa, Kevin Arias and Erik Then each had two RBIs in the opener. 
 
Randy Polanco earned the win for Lehman, tossing 6.1 innings in which he allowed four runs on five hits while finishing with eight strikeouts and three walks. 
 
Marc Weeks took the loss, going 3.1 innings while giving up nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits. He didn't walk a batter as he struck out five batters. 
 
John Jay got on the board in the first as Spallin opened the game with a double. After moving to third on a grounder, Mauro flew out to right field as Spallin tagged up and scored. 
 
In the bottom of the frame, Javaun Smith tied the game with a one-out solo home run to left center. Weeks got Rijo to ground out before Femin clubbed a solo home run to left, giving Lehman a 2-1 lead. 
 
Ranssel Pinedo sent a double down the left field line before coming into a score on a RBI single by Justin Nunez, as Lehman went ahead by two, 3-1. 
 
The Lightning tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, to make it 6-1. 
 
The Bloodhounds closed the gap to within two, after scoring three times in their half of the third. With two outs, Mauro reached on a single through the left side. 
 
Back-to-back walks to Michael Manzoeillo and David Michalski each drew walks. Simaan stepped in and ripped a two-run single to left before moving to second himself, cutting the lead to 6-3. 
 
The next batter, Zoquier, singled, that brought in Michalski, which made it 6-4. 
 
Lehman added to their lead with a two-run home run from Rijo followed by a solo round-tripper from Femin that made it 9-4. 
 
The home team continued the scoring, scoring a combined nine runs between the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by an eight-run sixth, capped by a two-run home run from Arias and a two-run double from Femin. 
 
Game 2 - John Jay 13, Lehman 16
In a high-scoring affair, John Jay found themselves trailing 10-5 after the second inning but staged a seven-run seventh to take a 12-10 lead. 
 
Lehman staged a late comeback of their own, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth that gave them a 14-12 advantage. 
 
The Bloodhounds narrowed the gap to one, 14-13, before Lehman scored two more times in the bottom of the sixth to hold on for a 16-13 win in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader. 
 
Spallin and Mauro each had multi-hit games with Spallin leading the with a 3 for 4 day. 
 
Mauro and Anthony Agosta each drove in four RBIs for John Jay. Simaan added two RBIs for the visitors. 
 
Four Lightning players had multi-hit games in the second game of Sunday's twinbill, led by Javaun Smith. Glennd Jarrin, Rijo, and Pinedo each had two hits. 
 
Erik Then produced a five-RBI game while Justin Nunez and Pinedo each drove in a two RBIs. 
 
Similar to game one, Spallin lead off with a double to right field before Agosta was issued a walk. 
 
Manzoeillo had grounded into a double play, that moved Spallin to third. The next batter, Simaan, singled to right center, bringing in Spallin as John Jay jumped ahead 1-0. 
 
Lehman wasted little time in getting on the board, as Rijo doubled home smith to tie the game at 1-1. Four batters later, Then drew a bases loaded walk, breaking the tie.
 
The Bloodhounds rallied for four runs in their half of the second, going up 5-2. Joseph Salerno reached on an infield single back to the pitcher before his brother, Thomas, walked. 
 
The next batter, Spallin, doubled to right that tied the score at 2-2. Manzoeillo sent a ground to second that brought in Salerno. Simaan followed with a RBI grounder that plated home Spallin, making it 4-2. 
 
Mauro hit a hard-hit single to right field as Agosta crossed the plate, as John Jay upped their lead to 5-2. 
 
Lehman ignited an eight-run bottom of the second, taking a 10-5. Jarrin brought in Arias on an RBI single back up the middle, making it 5-3. 
 
Smith and Rijo continued the trend, each plating home a run to tie the game at 5-5. 
 
With the bases loaded, Then delivered a go-ahead grand slam before Jarrin added his second RBI of the inning, a single through the left side, as Lehman doubled up their lead, 10-5. 
 
The Bloodhounds answered right back in their half of the third, putting up a seven spot, as the visitors went up 12-10.
 
Zoquier and Joseph Salerno each walked. With one out, Spallin reached on an infield single. 
 
The next batter, Agosta, connected on a towering grand slam, cutting the Lehman lead to one, 10-9. 
 
Following a pitching change by the Lightning, Manzoeillo singled and Simaan was hit by a pitch, continuing the rally. 
 
Mauro slugged a three-run home run to right center, as John Jay took a 12-10 lead. 
 
In the bottom of the third, Femin reached on a one-out single before moving to third on a double by Pinedo. 
 
Nunez connected on a hard-hit infield single to second that plated home Femin, trimming the John Jay lead to 12-11. 
 
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth before Lehman regained the lead, thanks to a three-run bottom of the fifth. 
 
A walk and two hit-by-pitches loaded the bases for the Lightning. Pinedo stepped in an notched a two-run double to center, as Lehman went in front, 13-12. Nunez added a RBI grounder to short that increased the lead to 14-12. 
 
John Jay closed the gap in their half of the sixth. Michalski led off the frame with a walk before moving to second on a Zoquier single through the left side. 
 
Both Zoquier and Michalski executed a double steal to move into scoring position. 
 
With one out, Thomas Salerno singled back up the middle that plated home Michalski, making it 14-13. 
 
Lehman tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, as they took a 16-13 lead. With two outs, Smith doubled, before Rijo was walked before three straight hit-by-pitches plated home both runs. 
 
The Bloodhounds return home this week as they will conclude their season series with Farmingdale State on Wednesday, April 5 at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn at 6:30 p.m. 
 
John Jay will host Baruch on Saturday, April 8, in their first-ever trip to Trenton, NJ as the Bloodhounds will play their home conference games at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
