Softball Drops Season Opener To Ramapo On Tuesday

Bronx, NY - The John Jay softball team opened their 2023 season hosting Ramapo College at Bahoshy Softball Complex/Murphy Field on the campus of Fordham University on Tuesday, falling to the Roadrunners, 7-3 in game one and 9-0 in the nightcap.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Game 1 - John Jay 3, Ramapo 7
Jordyn Prince led the way for the Bloodhounds in the opening tilt, collecting two hits while Angelina Schoelles, Sidney Bankston, and Jailene Santiago each drove in an RBI for John Jay.

Newcomer Kelly Fajardo collected her first collegiate hit for the Bloodhounds, finishing the contest 1 for 3.

Jaclyn Monaco led the way for the Roadrunners, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and driving in a pair of runs. Anna Messina and Nicole Cerasi joined Monaco in producing multi-hit games, each registering two hits. Katie Rygiel also drove in two RBIs for the visitors.

Both starting pitchers, Madison Gil for John Jay and Mahogany Wheeler, went the distance with Wheeler recording six strikeouts for Ramapo.

The visitors jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Alexis Corra scored on a wild pitch. The Bloodhounds didn't waste in their half of the first, erupting for three runs in taking a two-run lead.

Prince and Maleea Gallaspy each led off the game with back-to-back hits while Rylea Sandel drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases.

Schoelles worked the count before being walked as well, as Prince crossed the plate and tying the game at 1-1. The next batter, Bankston, lofted a sacrifice fly to center field that brought in Gallaspy as John Jay went ahead 2-1.

Jailene Santiago drove in her first John Jay RBI, sending a hard-hit grounder back to the pitch that plated Sandel as the Bloodhounds increased their lead.

Ramapo responded with three runs in the top of the second in retaking the lead, 4-3. Avery Kontura singled home Cerasi, trimming the deficit to one before the next batter, Rygiel, cleared the bases with a two-run double to center, as the Roadrunners regained the lead.

The score remained that way until the top of the sixth until Rygiel reached on an error that scored Monaco, upping the Ramapo lead to 5-3. The visitors tacked on two more runs in the top half of the seventh, as Monaco laced a two-run single up the middle.

Wheeler struck out the first two Bloodhounds in the bottom of the frame before Gallaspy worked a six-pitch walk to extend the inning but got Sandel swinging at strike three to preserve the win for the visitors.

Game 2: John Jay 0, Ramapo 9
Gallaspy and Fajardo each produced a hit for the Bloodhounds in the nightcap. Ramapo's Kassy Stefanski went six scoreless innings, giving up just the two hits and striking out eight to earn the win.

Both starters held shutouts until the third inning, when Corra doubled to right center that brought in Kontura to give the visitors a 1-0 edge. Ramapo added three more runs in the top of the fourth as Kontura cleared the bases with a triple to left center that increased the visitors lead to 4-0.

The Roadrunners added a run in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, before sealing the victory with three more in the top of the seventh, as Messina tripled to right field that plated home a pair and pinch-hitter Kori Gargiulo singled to left field that plated home Messina.

John Jay will head down to Naples, FL this weekend to compete in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Bloodhounds will open on Friday, March 10 at 9:00 a.m. as they will take on Clark before squaring off against Drew. On Saturday, John Jay is pitted against SUNY Brockport before finishing the day against Mitchell. On the Sunday, the softball team will tangle with William Paterson at 9:00 am before concluding play against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 11:00 a.m.
