Softball Splits Road Contest At University of Saint Joseph's; Rylea Sandel Notches 100th Career Hit

West Hartford, CT - The John Jay softball team saw their six-game win streak halted in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader at the University of Saint Joseph's (Conn) but immediately rebounded, defeating the Blue Jays, 8-7, in come-from-behind fashion. 
 
With today's results, the Bloodhounds move to 16-11 overall while the Blue Jays stand at 13-12. 
 
During the first game, John Jay sophomore infielder Rylea Sandel reached a milestone, as, in the first inning, she collected her 100th career hit. 
 

 
Game 1 - John Jay 5, University of Saint Joseph's (Conn) 8
Maleea Gallaspy and Kelly Fajardo each tallied three hits in the opener while Jordyn Prince, CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week, Jailene Santiago, CUNYAC Player of the Week, Sandel, and Kayla Sauers each had two hits with Santiago driving in two of the five RBIs. 
 
Sauers, Elika Rodrigues, and Prince added an RBI for the Bloodhounds. Santiago (12-4) was tagged with the loss, giving up eight runs on ten hits while walking three and striking out six batters.
 
Alyssa Roberts and Madelyn Ellis each had two hits for the Blue Jays with Ellis driving home a team-leading three RBIs. Alexis Volinsky contributed two RBIs while Roberts and Jenna Masiello each scored two runs, respectively. 
 
Kaitlyn Ouellette earned her fourth win of the season, going the distance in which, she gave up five runs (four earned) while surrendering 15 hits and striking out four and walking four batters. 
 
With one out in the top of the first, Gallaspy doubled to right center. Following a strikeout of Angelina Schoelles, Santiago ripped an RBI single to right field for the game's first run, plating home Gallaspy from second. 
 
Sandel, sitting on 99 career hits, wasted little time in recording the milestone hit, sending a screaming liner back up the middle for her 100th career hit. The Bloodhounds carried that momentum and nearly added their second run of the frame, but Santiago was thrown out at home, closing out the inning.
 
 
Following a scoreless second inning, John Jay got their second run of the game in their half of the third as Sauers sent a two-out RBI grounder to first that scored Santiago, who reached on a one-out single to left. 
 
Saint Joseph evened the ballgame up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Roberts led off the frame with a single through the right side before moving up on the single by Masiello. Ouellette advanced the runners on the grounder to second, as the Blue Jays had runners on second and third with two away before Ellis sent a single to right field, plating both runners. 
 
The Blue Jays took their first lead of the contest, staging a five-run bottom of the fifth, as they claimed a 7-2 advantage. A wild pitch brought home Kelsie LaHouse before Volinsky plated two on the RBI double to center field, making it 5-2. 
 
The next batter, Ouellette, continued her hot hitting from the plate, tripling home Volinsky. McKenzie Fairfax came on a pinch-runner for Ouellette and scored on the RBI single by Ellis, as the Blue Jays increased their lead to five, 7-2. 
 
The Bloodhounds responded with a run in their half of the sixth, as Santiago drew a walk while Gallaspy and Prince executed a double steal, with Prince crossing the plate before the tag, cutting the deficit to 7-3. 
 
The Blue Jays got that run back in the bottom half of the inning, as Roberts singled through the right side that plated home Isabel Milardo, who reached on a triple to right center, making it an 8-3 lead for the home team. 
 
John Jay tried to rally in the seventh, coming up with two runs in the frame. Two straight hits by Fajardo and Sauers gave the Bloodhounds runners on base. 
 
Mackenzie Tresch lofted a fly ball to right, as Fajardo advanced to third. With one out, Rodrigues reached on a fielder's choice grounder to second, scoring Fajardo as the Saint Joseph lead was cut in half, 8-4. 
 
Prince roped a single to third base that plated home Rodrigues as the Bloodhounds inched closer but Schoelles flew out to center ending the first game as John Jay's six-game win streak was halted. 
 
Game 2 - John Jay 8, University of Saint Joseph's (Conn) 7
Sandel continued her hot hitting as the reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week paced the Bloodhounds with three hits and drove in two RBIs. Fajardo matched Sandel with three hits while scoring twice. 
 
Prince contributed two hits while she along with Gallaspy, and Schoelles added an RBI in the come-from-behind win in the nightcap of the doubleheader. 
 
Santiago earned her 13th win of the season, tossing five innings in relief of Tresch, as she allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out four batters and issued no walks. Tresch lasted two innings, giving up five runs (four earned) while walking two before the switch. 
 
Milardo led the Blue Jays offense, going a perfect 4 of 4 from the plate in game two. Elaina Previty and Volinsky each had two hits while the duo along with Masiello drove in two RBIs apiece. 
 
Roberts was tagged with the loss, lasting 5.2 innings in which she allowed eight runs (three earned) on eight this while striking out two and walking three. The Saint Joseph's bullpen of Tessa D'Aquila and Ouellette work 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up a combined five hits in the nine combined batters faced. 
 
Following a scoreless first, the Bloodhounds jumped out with a four-run second inning. Santiago reached first on fielding error by the second baseman before moving to second on a passed ball. 
 
Sandel stepped into the box and uncorked her second home run of the season to left field, as John Jay raced out to a 2-0 lead. A double by Emily Sperl combined with a single from Fajardo gave the Bloodhounds runners on the corner before a wild pitch advanced Fajardo and scored Sperl. 
 
Rodrigues moved Fajardo to third on the sacrifice bunt before Prince reached on an infield single to third that brought in Fajardo, making it a 4-0 lead for the visitors. 
 
Saint Joseph's rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the third, batting around in the inning in which they tallied six runs on four hits in taking a two-run lead. 
 
Previty singled to left field that brought in both Fairfax and Allison Conger, trimming the lead in half. A single by Milardo followed by a walk to Roberts ended Tresch's afternoon inside the circle. 
 
Masiello doubled to right center that tied the game before a two-run double by Volinsky put the Blue Jays ahead by two, 6-4. 
 
John Jay inched back in the game in the top of the fourth. Rodrigues reached first on a fielding error off the bunt attempt. She proceeded to steal second and third. Prince walked but Rodrigues scored on the attempted double steal. 
 
Saint Joseph's tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, as Roberts reached first on an error by Gallaspy at third that allowed Previty to score. Santiago settled back in the circle, striking out Masiello and getting Volinsky to ground out to limit the damage. 
 
The game remained that way until the top of the sixth, when the Bloodhounds scored thrice in taking a one-run lead, 8-7. Fajardo led off the frame with single to right field. Rodrigues moved her over on the sacrifice bunt. 
 
Prince then reached on an error by the shortstop, as Fajardo scored. A double to left center off the bat of Gallaspy tied the game at 7-7 before Schoelles singled through the left side for the go-ahead score. 
 
John Jay threatened for more in the stanza as Santiago and Sandel each sent singles but Sperl lined out to right ending the threat. 
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Previty was hit by a pitch and Milardo doubled, giving the Blue Jays runners on the corners. Santiago fanned D'Aquila before Masiello grounded out to second ending the frame. 
 
Saint Joseph's tried to get the timely walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh. Volinsky led off the final inning with double to center. Adriana Quealy reached on an error by Sandel at short. 
 
A wild pitch moved up both runners to second and third with just one out. Jordyn Fitch sent a comebacker to Santiago, who alertly threw home to get Volinsky trying to score for the second out. 
 
Fitch moved to second on the wild pitch by Santiago, but she was able to preserve the win as Fairfax grounded out to third, ending the contest. 
 
John Jay will conclude their lengthy road trip on Thursday, April 13, as they will travel to Quincy, MA to tangle with Eastern Nazarene College with first-pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
