Softball Concludes Non-Conference Play With Split At Eastern Nazarene On Thursday

Quincy, MA - The John Jay softball team earned a split of their final non-conference contest of the 2023 season, as they left Quincy, MA with a 6-2 win over Eastern Nazarene in game one but fell to the Lions in game two by a 9-5 count.

With today's results, the Bloodhounds move to 17-12 overall while the Lions are 13-17.

Game 1 - John Jay 6, Eastern Nazarene 2
Three Bloodhounds finished with multi-hit performances in game one of the doubleheader on Thursday, paced by Maleea Gallaspy, who went 4 for 4 while adding an RBI.

Reigning CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Player of the Week, Rylea Sandel, tallied three hits in four at-bats while Pitcher of the Week, Jailene Santiago, went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Jordyn Prince matched Santiago with two RBIs.

Darcy Castro and Alex Schwenger each recorded two hits for the Lions with Jennelle Munoz and Bailey Olaveson driving in an RBI each for the home team.

Santiago recorded her 14th victory of the season while notching her sixth complete game of the season, finishing this contest giving up two runs on eight hits while not walking anyone and striking out six batters.

Munoz also went the distance, dropping her sixth game of the year, as she allowed six runs on 12 hits while recording three strikeouts for Eastern Nazarene.

Gallaspy reached on a one out single down the third base line. Angelina Schoelles reached on a fielder's choice as Gallaspy was retired for the second out of the frame.

With the count even at 1-1, Santiago connected on her team-leading fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field that gave the visitors an early advantage.

Eastern Nazarene got on the board in their half of the first. Taylor Brandt tripled to right field to start the inning before coming into score on the one-out error by the centerfielder.

The game remained a one-run lead for John Jay until the top of the fourth, when the Bloodhounds widened the gap to 6-1 with four runs in the frame.

Sandel led off with a first-pitch single to center field before moving to second on a hard-hit single up the third base line from Kayla Sauers. The next batter, Mackenzie Tresch, sent an RBI single up the middle that made it a 3-1 lead.

Following a well-time sacrifice bunt from Elika Rodrigues, Prince roped a two-run RBI single to right field that scored both Tresch and Sauers before Prince moved to third on the throw. Gallaspy doubled to center that brought in Prince, giving John Jay a five-run cushion.

Santiago continued to cruise on the mound, setting down six in a row before allowing a leadoff double to Castro to open the Lions' sixth inning. She came around to score on the RBI single from Munoz, as Eastern Nazarene chipped into the lead, 6-2.

The home team continued to rally, as Yaya Bowden reached on a bunt single that gave the Lions two runners on before Schwenger sent a single up the middle that loaded the bases.

Santiago got Danielle Maliszewski to pop out to Sandel at short before Brandt grounded out to Sandel to conclude the inning. The Albany, NY native retired the side on just six pitches to preserve the win.

Game 2 - John Jay 5, Eastern Nazarene 9
The hits didn't come at a premium in the nightcap of Thursday's doubleheader. Sandel and Gallaspy continued their torrid hitting, each going 3 for 4 in the contest with each driving in an RBI.

Prince added two hits while Santiago added a hit and an RBI in four trips to the plate.

Brandt led the way for the Lions with three hits and three RBIs while Schwenger and Daitriana Gongora added two hits apiece. Alexys Giddings notched two RBIs while Ashley Caldwell was credited with an RBI as well.

Nevaeh Echevarria was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out one. Her counterpart, Caoimhe Wernsing, earned the complete game victory, her second of the season.

The Lions jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after three innings of play, capped off by a five-run third. Giddings produced a two-run single to right before Schwenger scored on the double. Three batters later, Brandt doubled to right center, bringing in both Maliszewski and Gongora, giving them an eight-run lead.

John Jay answered with three in their half of the fifth after Eastern Nazarene tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth. Prince sent a one out double down the third base line before coming into score on the double from Gallaspy for the first Bloodhound run.

Santiago followed with a two-out double to right that scored Gallaspy and Sandel added an single up the middle that plated home Jogelys Sanchez, who pinch-ran for Santiago, as the deficit stood at six, 9-3.

In the top of the sixth, the Bloodhounds added two more scores as Schoelles reached on a fielding error by the shortstop before moving to second on the play as both Tresch and Sauers scored on the play, with John Jay trailing 9-5.

It would be the closest they got as Sauers grounded into the game-ending 4-6-3 double play.

The Bloodhounds close out the week on Saturday, as they will resume conference play with a rematch of last year's CUNYAC Championships, as they will welcome the Hunter College Hawks to Bahoshy Softball Complex/Murphy Field on the campus of Fordham University.

First-pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
