Baseball Defeated In Mid-Week Road Contest At St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn

Brookville, NY - The John Jay baseball team overcame a four-run deficit with five runs in their half of the fifth before tying the score in the top of the fourth. St. Joseph's University Brooklyn Bears plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the frame and scored eight runs over the final three innings as the Bloodhounds fell 15-6, on Wednesday afternoon.

With the setback, the Bloodhounds fall to 2-27 overall on the season while the Bears move to 8-12. 

Michael Manzoeillo recorded three hits in five at-bats while producing an RBI. Michael Mauro collected two hits while John Spallin notched two RBIs to lead the Bloodhounds. 

Five Bears produced multi-hits, led by Sean Schneeberg, who tallied three hits while driving in two RBIs. Chris Leary, Lucas Collet, Michael Gardener, and Matt Arcati each had two hits. Leary paced the team with three RBIs while Schneeberg, Gardener, Arcati and Louis Lombardi registered two RBIs in the win for the Bears. 

Michael Lonergan (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season, after tossing 2.2 innings while giving up two runs on four hits despite striking out three batters and walking one. Justin Contay worked four innings in relief to earn his second win of the season, as he allowed one unearned run on two hits while walking one and striking out six. 

Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the second when the Bears scored four times. Lombardi walked before Schneeberg singled through the right side that put runners on second and third on the throw. Alex Goldberg lined out to left field as Lombardi tagged up from third to plate home the first run of the game. Arcati followed up with an RBI single through the left side to make it 2-0. An RBI single from Will Romano and a RBI triple from Leary pushed the St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn lead to 4-0. 

John Jay rallied back with five runs in the top of the third. Anthony Agosta walked while Mauro followed with a single up the middle. Manzoeillo stepped up to the plated and connected on an RBI single. Ethan Simaan walked to load the bases for David Michalski, who sent a sacrifice fly to left, bringing in Mauro and ending Carmine Carbone's afternoon. Saul Zoquier reached on an error by the third baseman which moved him to second and Simaan to third but Manzoeillo was out at third. 

Tyler DeStefano singled through the right side, which brought in Simaan, cutting the deficit to one, 4-3. Thomas Salerno was hit by a pitch as the Bloodhounds now had two runners on with two outs. Spallin stepped in and sent a hard-hit double down the left field line as John Jay took a 5-4 lead with DeStefano and Zoquier coming around to score. 

SJUBK answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, as TJ Moussette brought in Gardener on a bunt single. The next batter, Arcati sent an RBI sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher as Lombardi came into score after reaching on an error by the second baseman as the Bears regained the lead, 6-5. 

The Bloodhounds tied the game in the top of the fourth as Simaan sent an RBI grounder to short which plated home the tying-run in Mauro, who reached on an error by the shortstop. 

The Bears plated their go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth, as Schneeberg delivered an RBI single through the left side that brought in Gardener, making it 7-6. St. Joseph's added one more in the bottom of the sixth as Lombardi lofted a fly ball to centerfield as Collet tagged from third. The Bears opened up the scoring in the bottom of the seventh, scoring six runs on five hits as they increased their lead to 14-6. 

Leary produced a two-run single to right before Gardener added a two-run single through the left side to double up the score, 12-6. Lombardi tripled to right center while Schneeberg flew out to right, which made it 14-6. In the bottom of the eighth, Dominic Yumul scored on a failed pickoff attempt from Preston Reitz

John Jay resumes CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play on Friday, April 14, as they will travel to CCNY for a doubleheader at Ohio Field in the Bronx, NY. 
 
First-pitch of Friday's doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
