Baseball Edged By CCNY in Game One, 6-5; Falls In CUNYAC Twinbill On Friday

Bronx, NY - The John Jay baseball team faced a six-run deficit but chipped away at the CCNY lead in game one of Friday's twinbill, being edged 6-5 in game one before dropping an 8-3 decision in the nightcap.
 
The Bloodhounds fall to 2-29 overall on the season and 0-6 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while the Beavers move to 8-12 overall and 4-2 in league play. 
 
Game 1 - John Jay 5, CCNY 6
David Michalski led the way for the Bloodhounds at the plate, going a perfect 3 for 3 while Michael Mauro, Michael Manzoeillo and Tyler DeStefano each recorded two hits. 
 
Manzoeillo drove in two of John Jay's five RBIs while Anthony Agosta, DeStefano and Joseph Salerno were each credited with one RBI. 
 
John Creegan and Mike Savino each had two hits for the Beavers in the opener with Ethan Angress and Savino driving in two RBIs each in the victory. 
 
Mauro was tagged with his second loss of the season after going 3.1 innings, giving up six earned on nine hits while striking out one and walking two batters. Christopher LaFrancesca and Christian Sanacora worked 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with LaFrancesca striking out two batters. 
 
Brandon Paider earned the win for the Beavers, going 4.1 innings despite giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits as he finished with five strikeouts and one walk. Max Murray earned his first save of the season, tossing two innings while recording three strikeouts. 
 
CCNY got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to a RBI single from Michael Chasanov. The Beavers added to their lead with a RBI single off the bat of Rich Cirigliano, making it 2-0 in favor of CCNY.
 
The Beavers staged a four-run bottom of the third to extend their lead to 6-0 as Angress delivered a two-run RBI single to left before Savino brought him and Kevin Budzinski in. 
 
John Jay began their rally with a run in the top of the fourth, as Joseph Salerno delivered an RBI double to center field with two outs. The Bloodhounds continued their comeback attempt in the top of the fifth, scoring three times, cutting the deficit to 6-4. 
 
Agosta sent a hard-hit single to left that scored John Spallin from third. Two batters later, Manzoeillo clubbed his second home run of the season, a towering shot to right that closed the gap to 6-4. 
 
The Bloodhounds rallied in the seventh. Manzoeillo was the catalyst, reaching on a single to center before a double play erased both her and Ethan Simaan. Michalski posted his third with a double to right before DeStefano brought him on an RBI single back up the middle. 
 
DeStefano was thrown out at second on strike by the catcher to the shortstop as the Beavers escaped with the one-run victory in the opener. 
 
Game 2- John Jay 3, CCNY 8
John Spallin collected three hits in four trips to the plate to lead the Bloodhounds in the second game while also adding an RBI. Manzoeillo continued his hot hitting, adding two hits while scoring twice. Michalski added two hits and two RBIs for the visitors.
 
Jonathan Rivera posted three hits in four attempts for the Beavers while Victor Murra Schott brought in three while notched two hits. Creegan also added two and two RBIs while Chris Lamond posted two hits for CCNY. 
 
Marc Weeks was pegged with the loss after going 3.1 innings, in which he allowed five runs on nine hits. His counterpart, James Dean Johnstone went five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits.
 
The Beavers scored a run in the first and second innings claiming a 2-0 lead before Spallin cut the deficit in half, 2-1, with an RBI single through the left side. 
 
CCNY tacked on three more scores in the bottom of the frame in building a 5-1 lead. Lamond doubled to left center before Schott sent a two-run single to left. 
 
John Jay inched closer with a run in the top of the fourth as Michalski doubled to right, bringing in Manzoeillo who walked. The Beavers continued to push their lead up, adding three more runs in the bottom of the fifth in taking a 8-2 lead. 
 
Schott sent a triple to the deepest part of center field before coming into score on a two-run single from Creegan. 
 
Michalski brought in his second RBI of the game with a double toe center that scored Manzoeillo. 
 
The Bloodhounds return to the diamond on April 18 as they will take on St. Joseph's University - Long Island at 4:00 p.m. in Patchogue, NY.
