Men's Volleyball Season Concludes In 2023 CUNYAC Semifinals At No. 2 Seed Baruch On Thursday

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team saw their impressive 2023 campaign come to a close on Thursday evening, as the No. 3 Bloodhounds were blanked by the No. 2 seed, Baruch College Bearcats, 3-0 (25-20; 25-19; 25-14), in the semifinals of the 2023 CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championship. 
 
With the loss, the Bloodhounds finish the year at 18-10 and 9-4 in conference play while Baruch moves to 17-10 and 12-2 in league play. The league title between the No. 1 seed Hunter and Baruch will be decided tomorrow at Hunter College. 
 
Newly-minted CUNYAC First Team All-Star Logan Ramos led the way for the Bloodhounds with eight kills and four digs. Fellow CUNYAC First Teamer, Kyle Barriffe-Johnson, added five kills, an ace and a dig. CUNYAC Second Team All-Star Jack Nugent finished his John Jay career with four kills and a dig. Maxwell Law finished with a team-high nine assists. 
 
Haoxin Hu led Baruch with a game-high 13 kills and a block. Defeng Han added a match-high 28 assists while producing five digs. Jonathan Liao led the way with seven digs while Ryan Oommen had two aces. 

The visiting Bloodhounds held a slim 4-2 lead early in the first thanks to a kill from Ramos. The Bearcats raced out to a 14-8 run as they took a 16-12 lead following a kill from Han. John Jay used a quick 6-3 run of their own to get to within one, 19-18, after another kill from Ramos, this time being setup by Law. Baruch closed out the set scoring six of the final eight points, as a kill from Andrew Ubanwa from Han sealed the first point of the overall match. 

Both teams traded points early in the second set, as the Bloodhounds managed to tie the set at 4-4 following a kill from Barriffe-Johnson. The Bearcats held the Bloodhounds to two points while using a 13-2 run to build a 17-6 advantage, capped by a service ace from Han. John Jay continued to put a valiant effort to get back in the set, outscoring the home team, 13-8, down the stretch by a kill from Ubanwa for the second straight set gave Baruch a 2-0 lead in the semifinal match. 
 
Baruch seized the momentum to start the third set, building a 6-1 lead before a service error Naoki Tani gave possession to the Bloodhounds. John Jay cut the lead to three, 7-4, after a kill from Jeferson Avila, which was set up from Akashdeep SinghThe Bearcats used a 12-5 to increase their lead to 20-9 following a kill from Hu. The two teams split the final ten points, 5-5, as Akil Vaughn closed out the match with a kill.
