Softball's Six-Run First Inning In Game Two Gives Bloodhounds A Split Of Saturday's Doubleheader Against Hunter

Bronx, NY - Following a low-scoring opener, in which the visiting Hunter Hawks edged the John Jay Bloodhounds, 2-0, the home team opened game two with a six spot in posting an 11-3 mercy-run rule victory to earn a split in Saturday's CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) doubleheader at Bahoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University.

With today's results, both the Bloodhounds and the Hawks move to 3-1 in the conference with John Jay running their overall record to 18-13 and Hunter moving to 8-18.

Game 1 - John Jay 0, Hunter 2
Both teams were to three hits in game one. Maleea Gallaspy, Rylea Sandel, and Elika Rodrigues each recorded a hit for the Bloodhounds.

Sophia Perez collected two hits and drove in an RBI while Paige Witalec added an RBI and a hit for the visitors.

Jailene Santiago posted her fifth complete game of the season despite being tagged with her fifth loss of the year. The Albany, NY native allowed two runs (one earned) on those three hits while walking one and matching her season-high of 12 strikeouts.

Her counterpart, Alyssa Curiale, earned her second win of the season, also going the full seven innings while giving up just three hits, walking one and striking out seven.

The game was knotted in a scoreless tie until the top of the third. Santiago struck out Leah Dillon for the first out. The next batter, Kayla Pilotti, reached on a throwing error by Gallaspy at third.

Pilotti moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kierra Shaw and came home to plate the first run of the game on a hard-hit single to left center.

The Bloodhounds staged a rally in the bottom of the fifth. Kayla Sauers drew a walk before she was lifted for a pinch-runner in Bernadette Kish

Rodrigues reached on a fielder's choice bunt and moved to a second on a throwing error by Curiale, giving the Bloodhounds runners on second and third with one out.

Jordyn Prince lofted a towering fly to left field. Kish tagged up but was thrown out trying to score, ending the threat.

In the top of the sixth, Perez reached base on a one-out single back to Santiago and promptly moved into scoring position after stealing second.

Down in the count, 1-2, Witalec laced a single to center that brought in Perez, giving Hunter a two-run advantage, they wouldn't relinquish.

Game 2- John Jay 11, Hunter 3 (5 innings)
Gallaspy finished game two with a 3 for 3 performance while scoring three of the 11 John Jay runs.

Angelina Schoelles, Sandel and Rodrigues each drove in two RBIs with Schoelles, Sandel and Kelly Fajardo collecting two hits.

Jessica Fowler produced the lone multi-hit performance for the Hawks, collecting two hits in three at-bats while driving in an RBI. Witalec and Nicole Bowe added an RBI as well.

After throwing a complete game in the first game, Santiago picked up her 15th win of the season and sixth complete game of the year, as she allowed the three runs on six hits while striking out three.

Leah Dillon gave up five runs in a third of an inning in taking the loss, her sixth of the season.

Prince and Gallaspy had back-to-back base hits to start the six-run rally. Both moved up on a wild pitch before Schoelles reached on an infield single to short that scored Prince.

Santiago brought in the second run as she reached on a fielding error by the center fielder, which allowed Gallaspy to cross the plate for the second run.

Sandel followed with a single to left and alertly moved up to second as Schoelles scored, making it 3-0.

Fajardo added a RBI single that made it 4-0 and ended Dillon's day inside the circle. Two batters later, Rodrigues connected on a double down the right field line, as Mackenzie Tresch and Fajardo scored to cap the inning.

John Jay added two more in the bottom of the second, as Sandel belted a single to left that scored Schoelles before Sauers added a RBI base hit to center that plated home Santiago to push the lead up to 8-0.

Two more scores came around in the bottom of the third, which made it 10-0. With Schoelles at the plate, Hunter's catcher, Adriana Ramirez, attempted to pick off Rodrigues at third, but her throw ricocheted off Schoelles' bat and out of play, as both runners were awarded the next base.

Schoelles plated home Gallaspy on a hard-hit grounder to short as the Bloodhounds reached double-figures.

Hunter got on the board in the top of the fourth. Witalec led off with a single to left before scoring on a Fowler tripe down the right field line. A batter later, Bowe sent a grounder to Rodrigues as Fowler crossed the plate for the Hawks' second run.

In the top of the fifth, with one out, Witalec flew out to left that scored Pilotti, but in the bottom of the inning, the Bloodhounds secured the win.

Gallaspy sent a two-out double to left field and scored what turned out to the be the game-sealing run on a fielding error by the pitcher as Gallaspy scored.

The Bloodhounds will be back in action on Friday, April 21, as they travel to Bellerose, NY to take on York College in CUNYAC play at Padavan-Preller Field.

First-pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
