Baseball Squanders Early Lead; Falls To Farmingdale State At Maimonides Park On Wednesday

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay baseball team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but the visiting Farmingdale State Rams plated across 13 runs over the next four innings to grab a 13-1 advantage. The Bloodhounds responded with a six-run bottom of the fifth but the Rams posted a ten-spot in their half of the sixth in securing a 23-7 win at Maimonides Park on Wednesday evening. 
 
Michael Mauro had two of John Jay (2-23) six hits in the contest while driving in an RBI. Thomas Salerno and John Spallin each contributed two RBIs on the night.
 
Daniel Molina and Eilan Pimentel each collected two hits with Pimentel, Bobby Pollock, and Jordan Lambert notching three RBIs on the evening. Brad Sakellarides, Ayden Pitt and Patrick Dallas contributed two RBIs in the victory for the Rams. 
 
Christian Sanacora was tagged with the loss, going three innings while giving up three runs on three hits and walking four batters despite recording two strikeouts. 
 
Farmingdale's opener, Will Stewart, collected his first win of the season, tossing 1.1 innings, giving up one unearned run without allowing a hit while striking out one and walking a batter. 
 
Sanacora retired the Rams in order in the first inning. In the John Jay first, Spallin reached on an error by the right fielder before moving to second. He found his way to third on the pop fly to right off the bat of Anthony Agosta
 
The next batter, Michael Manzoeillo, sent a grounder to short as Spallin crossed the plate for the first run of the game. 
 
The visitors quickly responded with two runs in their half of the second. Lambert led off the frame with a walk before Daniel Deutsch reached on an infield single to short, moving Lambert to third on the play. 
 
Louis Annunziata sent a sacrifice fly to center field that plated the tying-run in Lambert. Two batters later, Molina sent a hard-hit single back up the middle, as Kyle Dorset scored, giving Farmingdale a 2-1 lead. 
 
The visitors tacked on a run in the third, thanks to a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Pollock that made it 3-1. 
 
The Rams continued to add to their lead in the fourth, crossing the plate five times in taking an 8-1 lead. Pollock sent a two-run single to right field before Lambert cleared the bases on a towering three-run home run to right that put the visitors up by seven. 
 
Farmingdale mirrored their fourth inning, putting up five more runs in the fifth in building a 13-1 advantage. Pimentel With two runners on, Pimentel reached on an infield single to short that plated home Dorset making it 9-1. A bases loaded walk to Dallas upped the lead to 10-1 before a three scored on Espreon's sacrifice fly to right as an errant throw by Michael Luongo sailed into center, allowing two more runs to score.
 
The Bloodhounds made a comeback in the bottom of the fifth, sending 12 batters to plate, while scoring six runs on four hits and capitalizing on two Ram mishaps. 
 
Agosta started things off with a single to left field. Manzoeillo reached on a dribbler up the third baseline that was fielded by the catcher, giving John Jay a pair of runners on base.
 
Ethan Simaan was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases for Mauro, who, immediately, sent a hard-hit infield single to first that scored Agosta. 
 
The second run in the frame scored on a wild pitch before the Rams went to the bullpen. The new pitcher, Trevor Diamond, struck out David Michalski but walked the next batter, Saul Zoquier
 
Thomas Salerno stepped in and sent a two-run single to right field that scored both Mauro and Simaan. With now two outs in the frame, Spallin reached on a fielding error by the right fielder, as Salerno and Zoquier trotted home, making it 13-7. 
 
Farmingdale produced a ten-run top of the sixth, nearly batting around in the inning twice as they sent 16 hitters to the plate. Pimentel reached on a fielding error that plated home two runs. 
 
A bases loaded walk to Dallas followed by a wild pitch notched the Rams' 16th and 17th runs of the game.
 
Sakellarides and Pitt each recorded two RBIs, increasing the lead to 22-7 before Pitt came around to score on a wild pitch. 
 
The fog in the surrounding area of Coney Island became too much as play was halted in the top of the seventh and eventually called due to inclement weather. 
 
John Jay will host their first CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) series on Saturday, April 8, as they welcome Baruch College to Trenton, NJ and Trenton Thunder Ballpark, the home of the MLB Draft Leagues, Trenton Thunder.
 
First-pitch is set for noon.
