Baseball Drops Game One Of CUNYAC Tilt Against Lehman; Game Two Suspended Due To Inclement Weather

Trenton, NJ - The John Jay baseball team dropped game one of its CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) doubleheader to Lehman College, 17-8. Game two was suspended in the bottom of the third with the Bloodhounds up 7-5 due to inclement weather in and around the Trenton Thunder Ballpark area.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 2-32 and 0-7 in league play while the Lightning moves to 4-17 and 4-3 in the conference.

Game 1 - John Jay 8, Lehman 17
Seven Bloodhounds had a hit in the contest, with John Spallin and Ethan Simaan each driving in two RBIs for John Jay. Michael Mauro and Spallin each scored a pair of runs for the home team in the contest.

Marc Weeks (1-11) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits over 3.1 innings of work. The Bloodhounds got to starter Randy Polanco, as he allowed seven runs (five earned) while walking six batters and striking out three.

Tran Hennessy earned the win in relief, giving up one unearned run on two hits despite walking four and striking four batters.

Ranssel Pinedo led the way for Lehman with four hits while Ryan Rosa and Jeremmy Santos each notched three hits while Nomar Rijo collected two hits. Pinedo and Rijo drove in three RBIs, respectively, while Rosa, Santos, Frederick De La Rosa added two RBIs.

John Jay jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. David Michalski led off the frame with walk before Mauro doubled him in for the first score of the contest. Two batters later, Simaan delivered a single to right field and advanced to second on the throw that brought in Mauro, making it 2-0, but Michael Manzoeillo was thrown out trying to tack on an insurance run.

Lehman responded with four runs in the top of the second in taking a two-run lead. Pinedo and Santos each reached on a single before being moved over on the sacrifice bunt from Justin Nunez for the first out of the inning.

De la Rosa tied the game with a bases-clearing, two-run double to left center field before moving up 90 feet on the passed ball and later came in to score on a wild pitch.

A walk to Patrick Ortiz gave the visitors a runner on before Rosa sent a single through the right side, doubling up the lead on John Jay at 4-2.

The Bloodhounds rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the third. Spallin worked a one-out walk before stealing second. Agosta ripped an RBI single to left that brought in Spallin, cutting the lead to one, 4-3.

Agosta moved into scoring position after a successful steal of second and scored the then tying-run off a fielding error from the third baseman off the bat of Simaan, as the game was knotted at 4-4.

Lehman staged a five-run top of the fourth in retaking the lead at 9-4. Rosa and Rijo each came up with clutch RBI singles through the left side that plated home a run. Pinedo followed that up a batter later with a two-run double to left center before scoring on the Santos double.

John Jay answered right back with four runs of their own, trimming the deficit to just one, 9-8. Thomas Salerno worked a leadoff walk before stealing second.

Mauro walked, giving two runners on for Spallin, who promptly uncorked a two-run triple to left center field, which put a close to Polanco's afternoon.

Hennessy, a sub-marine thrower, gave up a run on the first batter that he saw in Manzoeillo, who reached on a throwing error from the shortstop as Spallin crossed the plate, making it 9-7.

Manzoeillo stole second before Agosta walked. The two moved further into scoring position off the failed picked off attempt by the catcher, as the ball sailed into the outfield with both runners advancing, with Manzoeillo scoring as a result, making it a 9-8 contest in favor of Lehman.

Simaan walked, continuing the momentum for the Bloodhounds but Joseph Salerno grounded into the inning-ending 1-4-3 double play, ending the threat.

The game remained that way until the top of the sixth, when the Lightning sparked an eight-run top of the sixth, going up 17-8. Lehman batted around, as Rijo delivered on of the big blast in the frame, a two-run triple to left field that made it 16-8 before coming into score on a fielding error by Thomas Salerno at short.

Game 2 - John Jay 7, Lehman 5 | Game Suspended in the bottom of the third due to inclement weather

The two teams were pitted in a back-and-forth affair until Mother Nature decided to put a damper on this potential high-scoring contest.

Lehman struck first for two runs in their half of the first, as Rijo doubled to left field brining in Javaun Smith for the 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Pinedo, continued his torrid stretch, lofting a sacrifice fly to center that brough in Rosa for the second run of the game.

John Jay wasted little time in responding with the game-tying runs of their own. Michalski led off the game for the Bloodhounds with a walk before stealing second.

Spallin delivered a hard-hit single that reached the outfield before moving up on the throw as Michalski scored, making it 2-1.

The first-year Bloodhound outfielder moved to third on a wild pitch before Agosta tied the game on a RBI infield single to shortstop.

The Lightning went ahead by two, 4-2, in the top of the second. Nunez walked and came around to score the go-ahead run on the double off the bat of de la Rosa, making it 3-2. Rosa sent a hard-hit grounder to shortstop that plated home de la Rosa, giving the Lighting a two-run lead.

Lehman added one more in their half of the third, making it 5-2, as Pinedo drove in Elias Fermin on a double to left center field.

The Bloodhounds answered back before the weather became an issue with five runs of their own, in taking a 7-5 advantage before the game was suspended due to lightning and heavy rain.

Michalski led off with a triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Mauro drew a walk and scored on a double from Spallin, as John Jay trailed by one, 5-4.

A walk to Manzoeillo and a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt by Agosta loaded the bases for the Bloodhounds, but, a hard-hit liner from Simaan was snagged by the third baseman, who doubled off Spallin at third.

Tyler DeStefano walked to reload the bases before Ryan Kilcarr sent a two-run single back up the middle, as the Bloodhounds found themselves leading by one, 6-5.

DeStefano scored on a wild pitch as both Thomas Salerno and Ryan Kilcarr moved into scoring position with the Bloodhounds leading 7-5.

Michalski was intentionally walked with the count 3-2 before Hennessy was brought on to replace Chris Delgado.

Hennessy couldn't face Mauro, the next scheduled batter, as lightning forced both teams to the dugout before the skies opened up and play was suspended.

No makeup date has been announced for this game to resume.
