Baseball Earns Split Of April 22 Twinbill; Defeats Lehman, 10-5, In Resumption Of Game Two On Wednesday

Bronx, NY - In a contest that spanned two states and two weeks to complete, the John Jay baseball team earned a 10-5 triumph on Wednesday, May 3, to split the doubleheader with Lehman. Today's game resumed at 4:00 p.m. at The APEX South Field, home of the Lightning, as the Bloodhounds were the home team for the contest.

With the win, John Jay moved to 3-32 on the year and 1-7 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while Lehman fell to 4-18 and 4-4 in league action as of April 22nd.

The Bloodhounds enter the final weekend of the regular season with a 3-35 overall mark and 1-9 in conference while the Lightning are 5-20 and 4-6 in the circuit.

John Spallin finished the game going 2 for 2 with two walks and drove in three RBIs for the Bloodhounds. Ryan Kilcarr finished with two RBIs while Michael Mauro, Anthony Agosta, and Ethan Simaan also added an RBI in the victory for the Bloodhounds.

Mauro, who started the contest, earned his first win of the season, throwing six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out three despite walking eight. Marc Weeks earned his first save of the season, throwing a scoreless seventh with a strikeout.

Nomar Rijo led the way for Lehman with two hits while adding an RBI. Ranssel Pinedo went 1 for 2 with two RBIs to pace the Lightning at the plate. Ryan Rosa, and Frederick de la Rosa each added an RBI for the visitors.

Chris Delgado was saddled with the loss, giving up nine runs on five hits while walking six and striking out one. Jeremmy Santos, who went 1 for 3 at the plate, pitched the final 3.1 innings in the restart, allowing a run on two hits while walking four and striking out three.

Lehman struck first for two runs back on April 22 at Trenton Thunder Ballpark as Rijo doubled to left field that brought in Javaun Smith. Following a walk to Elias Fermin, Pinedo sent a sacrifice fly to center that plated home Rosa.

John Jay rallied to tie the score in bottom of the frame. David Michalski walked and promptly stole second. With one out, Spallin laced a single and moved to second on the throw as Michalski came across to score. Spallin advanced to third on a wild pitch before Agosta sent a hard-hit grounder to short that plated home the tying run in Spallin.

Lehman tacked on two more runs in the top of the second, taking a 4-2 lead. De la Rosa doubled to left field that scored Nunez, who led off the second with a walk. Two batters later, Rosa sent an RBI grounder to short that scored de la Rosa from third, giving the visitors a two-run lead. The Lightning added one more in their half of the third, making it 5-2, as Pinedo drove in Fermin on a double to left center field.

The Bloodhounds answered back before the weather became an issue with five runs of their own, in taking a 7-5 advantage before the game was suspended due to lightning and heavy rain.

A walk to Manzoeillo and a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt by Agosta loaded the bases for the Bloodhounds, but, a hard-hit liner from Simaan was snagged by the third baseman, who doubled off Spallin at third.

Tyler DeStefano walked to reload the bases before Ryan Kilcarr sent a two-run single back up the middle, as the Bloodhounds found themselves leading by one, 6-5.

DeStefano scored on a wild pitch as both Thomas Salerno and Ryan Kilcarr moved into scoring position with the Bloodhounds leading 7-5.

On Wednesday, play resumed as Mauro and Spallin each drew bases loaded walks that pushed the Bloodhounds lead to 9-5.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth when John Jay added a run in the bottom of the sixth. Spallin led off the frame with a walk before Michael Manzoeillo singled through the left side that moved Spallin to second. Simaan ripped a hard-hit double to the deepest part of left center field that brought home Manzoeillo as John Jay doubled up the score, 10-5.

Mauro gave up a walk and single before Weeks came on to strike out Rijo for the first out of the top of the seventh.
Fermin was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases for Lehman. The next batter, Pinedo, grounded out to Mauro, who moved to third, who went to the bag before firing off a strike to Simaan at first to give John Jay their first conference win of the season.

The Bloodhounds conclude the 2023 regular season on Saturday morning, as they will host the CCNY Beavers at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 11:00 a.m.
