Baseball Falls In Final Road CUNYAC Contest At Baruch On Friday

Bronx, NY - The John Jay baseball team trailed early in game one but scored three times to cut the deficit to Baruch to one, but, the Bearcats added a score in the bottom of the sixth to outlast the Bloodhounds, 5-3, in game one. 
 
In the second game of Friday's twinbill, the two teams were in a pitching duel until the fifth, when Baruch scored five runs but was answered with three by John Jay before Baruch tacked on four more to win 9-3. 
 
With today's results, the Bloodhounds fall to 2-35 on the season and 0-9 in CUNY Athletic Conference while the Bearcats move to 10-12 and 8-2 in the league. 
 
Game 1 - John Jay 3, Baruch 5
Michael Mauro, Ethan Simaan and Thomas Salerno each had a hit in the opening contest with John Spallin, Michael Manzoeillo, and Anthony Agosta each driving in an RBI. 
 
Marc Weeks (1-12) went the distance, giving up the five runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out a season-high nine batters.
 
Nathaniel Demchak earned his fourth win of the season, going six innings while giving up three runs on three hits, two walks and striking out 10 batters. 
 
Joseph Bello earned his second save of the year, walking two and striking out two in his one inning of work.
 
Pedro Tejada Jr., Bello, and Kenneth Taveras each had two hits with Taveras driving in two RBIs. Joseph Cocozza and Tejada Jr. added an RBI each. 
 
Baruch got on the board first with a pair of runs in the first as Cocozza sent an RBI single back up the middle that plated home Roy Longarzo, who reached on a triple to left field. Tejada Jr. scored Cocozza with an RBI double. 
 
The Bearcats added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Taveras led off the inning with a solo home run to left before two batters later, Cocozza, sent a sacrifice fly to centerfield. 
 
The Bloodhounds narrowed the gap in the top of the sixth. Thomas Salerno singled to right field and promptly stole second. David Michalski was hit by a pitch before Mauro singled to right to load the bases. 
 
Spallin worked a bases loaded walk to get the visitors on the board. Manzoeillo and Agosta lofted back-to-back sacrifice flies that brought John Jay to within one, 4-3. 
 
Baruch added to its lead in the bottom of the frame, as Taveras produced an RBI single to left that pushed their lead to two. 
 
The Bloodhounds threaten in the seventh. Saul Zoquier walked before he was lifted for a pinch-runner in Javier Simpson. Michalski drew a two-out walk before Mauro flew out to end the contest.
 
Game 2 - John Jay 3, Baruch 9
Michalski led the way for the Bloodhounds with two hits in the second contest while Agosta and Simaan each added an RBI. 
 
Mauro was tagged with the loss after tossing 4.2 innings, as he gave up five runs on two hits while walking four and striking out six batters. 
 
Joseph Cocozza and Pedro Tejada Jr. each had two hits with Roy Longarzo, Cocozza and Tejada Jr. driving in two RBIs apiece. 
 
Jeremy Ramirez went six innings to earn his third win of the season as he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out six. Brian Baek finished the contest, firing off a scoreless ninth. 
 
It was complete stalemate until the bottom of the fifth, when the Bearcats erupted for five runs in the bottom of the inning, as Baruch batted around.
 
Cocozza delivered the biggest-hit of the frame for the Bearcats, sending a two-run triple to the deepest part of the ballpark as Baruch went ahead 4-0 before Tejada Jr. added an RBI single to right field, making it 5-0. 
 
The Bloodhounds, similar to game one, made a rally in their half of the sixth. Michalski led off with a double before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. 
 
Spallin walked before moving into scoring position on a double from Manzoeillo. Agosta sent a sacrifice fly to left that plated home Spallin that made it 5-2.
 
Simaan ripped a hard-hit double that brought in Manzoeillo, cutting the Bearcats advantage to two, 5-3. 
 
In the bottom of the inning, Longarzo sent a two-run single that increased their lead to 7-3 before Tejada Jr. brought him in on a RBI single. 
 
Michalski sent a two-out single to keep the rally going. Mauro drew a walk before both runners moved up. Spallin struck out swinging, ending the contest.
 
The Bloodhounds will resume their suspended CUNYAC contest with Lehman College on Wednesday, May 3, at 4:00 p.m. at Lehman. 
 
The game, which was favoring John Jay leading 7-5 in the bottom of the third, was halted due to inclement weather at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
