Baseball Edged In Game One Of Regular Season Finale Twinbill; Falls To CCNY On Saturday

Trenton, NJ - The John Jay baseball team dropped their final two CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) contests of 2023 season, being edged by CCNY, 5-4, in game one before falling 9-5 in game two. 
 
With today's results, the Bloodhounds finish the regular season with a 3-37 overall record and 1-11 in the league. The Beavers finished the season with a 13-18 record and 9-3 in the league. 
 
The CUNYAC postseason is set to begin on Tuesday, May 9. 
 
Game 1 - CCNY 5, John Jay 4
Michael Manzoeillo and Michael Mauro each produced multi-hit games in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader, with Manzoeillo collecting a team-high three hits and an RBI while Mauro notched two hits. 
 
Joseph Salerno had one of the biggest hits for the Bloodhounds, as he gave John Jay a two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. Ethan Simaan also added an RBI in the contest. 
 
Marc Weeks gave up two runs (one earned) in 3.1 innings while not factoring in the decision. Michael Lonergan came on in relief, pitching a scoreless two-thirds of an inning. 
 
Sean Jost (0-6) suffered the loss, coming on in relief of Lonergan, as he gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits. 
 
Ethan Angress, Michael Chasanov, and Stephen Suprun each had multi-hits, with Angress collecting three hits and scoring twice. Chasanov and Suprun had two hits. Chasanov, Jonathan Rivera, and Kevin Budzinski each had an RBI for the visitors. 
 
Brandon Paider started for the visitors, lasting three innings in which he gave up a run on two hits while walking three and striking out two. 
 
James Dean Johnstone came on and surrendered three runs on three hits before Jack Daly earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless frames while giving up three hits and striking out five batters. 
 
Both teams scored in the opening frame. CCNY got on the board thanks to an RBI single to left from Chasanov.
 
In the bottom of the inning, David Michalski led off with a walk before he stole second. Two batters later, Manzoeillo ripped the game-tying RBI single. 
 
The Beavers pulled ahead in the top of the third. Angress started the inning with a walk before John Creegan followed with base hit up the middle. 
 
Rivera reached on a fielding error by Saul Zoquier at first. Budzinski sent a hard-hit single that just got past the reach of Mauro at third that plated home Creegan, giving CCNY a 2-1 advantage. 
 
Following a scoreless fourth inning, the Bloodhounds staged a three-run bottom of the fifth, as John Jay took a 4-2 lead. 
 
Mauro started the inning with a single to centerfield. John Spallin moved Mauro into scoring position after a groundout to third. 
 
Manzoeillo continued his hot hitting, singling through the left side as the Bloodhounds had runners on the corner before he stole second. 
 
Anthony Agosta was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Bloodhounds. The next batter, Simaan, was also plunked by a arrant pitch, scoring the tying-run in Mauro, knotting the game at 2-2. 
 
With two out in the inning, Joseph Salerno ripped the go-ahead two run single to left, as John Jay went ahead 4-2. 
 
The next batter, Thomas Salerno, singled up the middle as J. Salerno rounded second but was thrown out at third before Simaan was able to cross the plate. 
 
The Beavers found the equalizer in the top of the sixth. Chasanov started things with a single up the middle. Suprun, with one-out, doubled to the deepest part of Trenton Thunder Ballpark's right center field, as CCNY had a pair of runners on with just one out. 
 
The next batter, Tyler DiBlasi, reached on a fielding error by Zoquier, allowing Suprun and Chasanov to score, as the game was tied at 4-4.
 
The Bloodhound tried to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Mauro sent one-out double to right center, but was stranded there after back-to-back strikeouts of Manzoeillo and Agosta. 
 
In the top of the seventh, CCNY broke the tie, as Angress singled and stole second, but a high thrown from J. Salerno sailed into centerfield, allowing Angress to move to third. 
 
The next batter, Creegan, sent a pop fly to right field, but Michalski camped under the ball, secured the catch, and fired off a laser to Salerno at the plate, keeping Angress at third. 
 
Rivera was able to send a deep fly to center as Angress tagged up and scored the go-ahead run, as CCNY took a 5-4 lead. 
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Zoquier reached on a single to center before Javier Simpson came on to run for him. J. Salerno struck out swinging but Simpson was able to move into scoring position. 
 
Simpson was left at second as T. Salerno grounded back to Daly as CCNY held on for the one-run victory. 
 
Game 2 - CCNY 9, John Jay 5
Both teams staged a pair of high-scoring innings, but the Beavers tacked on four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to get past the Bloodhounds, 9-5. 
 
Manzoeillo continued his hot hitting, collecting two hits. Michalski had one of the biggest hits in the contest, finishing 1 for 4 with three RBIs. Anthony Agosta added an RBI as well for John Jay. 
 
Michael Luongo lasted a third of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits but didn't factor into the decision. Christian Sanacora (0-5), who came on for Luongo, suffered the loss, after pitching 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. 
 
Chasanov and Suprun each had two hits while he, Rivera, and Rich Cirigliano had two RBIS in the victory. 
 
Matthew Kue toed the mound in game two, working two innings while giving up five runs (two earned) on three hits but didn't factor into the decision. 
 
Ismael Jimenez earned his first win of the year, throwing two scoreless innings and only allowing two hits. Richard Vento worked the final three frames, earning his first save of the year. 
 
All nine Beaver batters had an at-bat in the first, as CCNY tallied four runs on five hits. Angress walked while Creegan moved him to second on a single to left. 
 
Rivera laced a double to left center field that plated across the first runs of the second game. The next batter, Chasanov, sent an RBI single to right that made it 3-0. 
 
Sanacora came on for Luongo after a wild pitch moved Chasanov to third. The first batter that Sanacora faced, Suprun, singled home Chasanov with an RBI single to right, making it 4-0. 
 
John Jay wasted little time in responding, answering back with a five-run second inning, claiming the one-run lead. 
 
Manzoeillo kick started the rally with a triple to right center. A walk to Simaan, gave the Bloodhounds runners on the corner as Agosta sent a sacrifice fly to right, that brought in Manzoeillo. 
 
A single by Michael Emanuele moved Simaan to second. The next batter, J. Salerno, reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, which scored Simaan, cutting the deficit in half, 4-2. 
 
Following a strikeout to T. Salerno, Michalski uncorked his first home run of the season, a towering shot to left as the Bloodhounds went up 5-4. 
 
The score remained that way until the top of the fifth when CCNY scored four runs their own, taking a 8-5 advantage, as Suprun brought in Rivera on a RBI single and staged a double steal that allowed Budzinski to steal home, making it 6-5. 
 
The Beavers added to their lead as Cirigliano doubled, making it 8-5 in favor of the visitors. CCNY added a run in the top of the sixth as Victor Murra Schott was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, making it 9-5.
