Top Seed Softball Advances To CUNYAC Winner's Bracket; Blanks No. 4 Seed Brooklyn 11-0 On Day One

Brooklyn, NY - The No. 1 seed, John Jay softball team, opened up the 2023 CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championship with an 11-0 triumph over No. 4 seed Brooklyn to advance to the winner's bracket on Day One of the tournament. 
 
With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 24-15 overall while the Bulldogs fall to 12-16. The Bloodhounds will take on the No. 3 seed Hunter at 5:45 p.m. 
 
Prior to the start of today's championship, the Bloodhounds were awarded the 2023 regular season title. 
 

 
Rylea Sandel and Mackenzie Tresch each collected two hits for the Bloodhounds while Jailene Santiago produced three RBIs while Sandel chipped in two. 
 
Santiago cruised to her 20th win of the season, going five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five batters. 
 
After allowing a leadoff double to Zoey Van Vleet, Santiago Melanie Millan swinging at strike three. With the punchout, Santiago recorded her 200th strikeout of the season. 
 
 
In the bottom of the first, Maleea Gallaspy reached on a hit-by-pitch before a batter later, Santiago clubbed her ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center field, as the Bloodhounds took a 2-0 lead. 
 
The next batter, Sandel, doubled, and came to score on the RBI single by Kelly Fajardo, giving John Jay a three-run cushion. 
 
The Bloodhounds continued their scoring prowess, tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the second. Sidney Bankston was hit to reach first before coming into score on the RBI single from Tresch. 
 
With one out, Gallaspy doubled to score Tresch as the lead increased to 5-0. For Gallaspy, it was a milestone hit for her as she became the second Bloodhound this season to reach 100 career hits, joining teammate Sandel. 
 

 
Kayla Sauers added a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-0. 
 
John Jay opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth, adding five more runs in building an 11-0 lead. 
 
Tresch kicked things off with a single to right and moved to second on a fielding error by the Bulldogs' pitcher. A walk to Gallaspy loaded the bases for Schoelles. 
 
The Bloodhounds' first baseman ripped a single to left field that scored Tresch, as the Bloodhounds upped the lead to 7-0. 
 
The next batter, Santiago, lofted a sacrifice fly to right that made it 8-0. Sandel connected on a two-run RBI single back up the middle, as the Bloodhounds increased the lead to ten. Sauers brought in Sandel on a fielding error from the third baseman that made it 11-0. 
 
Santiago's streak of 12 straight batters retired was snapped when Dasha Goodman singled to lead off the fifth inning. 
 
Paulino reached on a fielder's choice that forced Goodman out at second for the first out. Santiago struck out both Khalil and Guzzardi to end the ballgame.
