CHAMPIONS! John Jay Softball Captures Program's Second CUNYAC Title In 5-2 Triumph Over No. 2 Seed Baruch On Friday Afternoon

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay softball team overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the No. 2 seed, Baruch Bearcats, 5-2, to claim the 2023 CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) league title on Friday afternoon.

The Bloodhounds, who moved to 26-15, brought home the program's second league title and first since 2000. The Bearcats finish the season 17-15. John Jay will wait to hear their names called on Monday, May 15, during the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Selection Show, which will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 1:00 p.m.

Jailene Santiago, who earned her 22nd win of the season (22-7), was named the 2023 CUNYAC Most Valuable Player, after tossing her 12th complete game of the year, going the full seven while giving up two runs on four hits with one walk and striking out five batters.

At the plate, Santiago went 1 for 3 with an RBI to her credit and finished the two-day, three-game championship tournament, with a .429 batting average, one home run, six RBIs. Inside-the-circle, she posted a 1.24 ERA over 17 innings in which he allowed 11 hits, three earned runs, one walk and 14 strikeouts while holding batters to a .180 batting average.

Maleea Gallaspy led the way for the Bloodhounds with two hits, with her first hit of the day going for an inside-the-park round tripper, her first of the playoffs and fourth of the season. The Murrieta, CA native added two RBIs, giving her 45 for the season. Angelina Schoelles, Jordyn Prince, Sidney Bankston, and Mackenzie Tresch each added a hit with Schoelles driving in an RBI.

Megan Bell, Julia Cuttone, Danielle Petrunti and Grace Oscuh all had a hit in the championship match, with Carly Quint and Petrunti driving in an RBI for the Bearcats. Caroline Gallagher (5-7) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) in 4.2 innings on seven hits. Quint came on, firing off 1.1 scoreless innings in which she recorded a strikeout and a walk.

Baruch pushed across the first runs of the contest in the top of the first. Bell was the catalyst, sending a single to center before Cuttone moved her to second on a base hit to left. Both runners moved up on the wild pitch before Quint sent an RBI grounder to Santiago inside the circle, scoring Bell to give Baruch the early 1-0 lead. The next batter, Petrunti, sent a hard-hit single to right field that scored Cuttone, making it 2-0 in favor of the No. 2 seed. Santiago settled down on the mound, finishing the inning with back-to-back swinging strikeouts.

The Bloodhounds wasted little time in getting back in the contest. With one out in the frame, Gallaspy delivered a laser down the right field line, as she bolted around the bases and slide in under the tag at the plate for the inside-the-park home run, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1.

Following a scoreless second inning, John Jay scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the stanza, taking a 3-2 lead. Bankston led off with a single to right center before Tresch connected on a double down the right field line, as the Bloodhounds had runners on second and third with no outs. After Prince fouled out to first, Gallaspy notched her second RBI of the contest, lofting a deep fly to center that brought in Bankston. The next batter, Schoelles, reached on a fielding error by the shortstop as Tresch crossed the plate as the go-ahead score, as John Jay went ahead 3-2.

The Bloodhounds added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to widen their advantage by three. Prince reached on a single to left field before Gallaspy sent a base knock back-up the middle, as the Bloodhounds had a pair of runners on first and second with just one out. Schoelles stepped up and promptly uncorked a ground-rule double that brought in Prince and moved Gallaspy to third. Santiago drove in John Jay's fifth and final run with a RBI grounder to short with Gallaspy crossing the plate.

In the circle, Santiago retired the final 13 batters she faced, including Bridget Campanelli, who flew out to Kelly Fajardo in center as the celebration for the Bloodhounds began on the mound.
