Softball Blanked On Opening Day of NCAA First Round At Virginia Wesleyan

Virginia Beach, VA - The 2023 CUNYAC Softball champions, the John Jay Bloodhounds, were shutout on the first day of the 2023 NCAA Division III Softball Championships, falling to the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins, 6-0, on Thursday afternoon.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 26-16 overall and will take on Manhattanville on Friday, after the Valiants dropped a 3-2 decision to the College of New Jersey (TCNJ). The Marlins move to 36-10 on the year.

John Jay recorded seven hits on the day, as Jordyn Prince and Kayla Sauers each produced two hits. Rylea Sandel, Mackenzie Tresch and Jailene Santiago all went 1 for 3 in the contest.

Caitlin Myers, Julia Piotrowski and Autumn Boothe each drove in two RBIs with Myers and Piotrowski collecting two hits in the win for the Marlins.

Jailene Santiago, the 2023 CUNYAC Pitcher of the Year, took the loos, allowing the six runs on eight hits while striking out five batters.
Emma Adams picked up her eighth win of the season, surrendering just three hits and striking out two batters.

Virginia Wesleyan got on the board in the bottom of the second as Myers led off with a single before Piotrowski tripled to left center that plater Myers in for the first run of the contest.

The next batter, Booth, sent a fly ball to newly-minted CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Kelly Fajardo, as Piotrowski tagged from third and scored, making it 2-0 in favor of the home team.

VWU tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third to go up five. One-out walks to Pollack and Adams moved the runners for Myers, who delivered a two-run RBI single back up the middle, as the Marlins increased their lead to 4-0.

The next batter, Piotrowski, singled back up the middle that plated home Myers, running the score up to 5-0.

The Bloodhounds threaten in the top of the sixth. Back to back singles by Tresch and Prince gave the visitors runners on first and second before the CUNYAC Player of the Year, Maleea Gallaspy, reached first on an error by the shortstop to load the bases.

CUNYAC All-Star Angelina Schoelles flew out to right field for the first out before Tresch was thrown out trying to tag from third base, for the second out of the frame. Santiago grounded out to second that thwarted the Bloodhounds rally.

The Marlins added on one more run in the bottom of the stanza to go up 6-0 as Boothe delivered another timely hit, this one, reaching the left center wall as Booth cruised into second after scoring Piotrowski, who walked and stole second to start the frame.

John Jay continued to fight, as Rylea Sandel singled up the middle to jump start the top of the seventh. With one out, Sauers connected for her second hit of the day, this one a single to right that moved Sandel to third and Sauers to second on the error by the right fielder.

Both runners were stranded as Sidney Bankston struck out swinging at strike three before Tresch grounded out to short, ending the contest.
