Softball Drops Non-Conference Finale At William Paterson, 2-1, On Thursday Afternoon

Wayne, NJ - The John Jay softball team dropped their final non-conference tilt of the 2023 season, 2-1, on the road at William Paterson on Thursday afternoon.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds stand at 22-14 overall while the Pioneers move to 23-13-1 on the year.

Kelly Fajardo, Kayla Sauers, and Mackenzie Tresch each had a hit on the day for the visitors as Jordyn Prince drove in the lone RBI of the contest for John Jay.

Jailene Santiago, the reigning CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Player of the Week, went the distance despite suffering the loss, as she allowed two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three batters.

Caitlin Monahan paced the Pioneers offense, recording two of the five hits for William Paterson while recording both RBIs to preserve the one-run triumph.

Lilah Guthy earned the win, allowing just one run on three hits over her 4.1 innings of work in which she added a strikeout. Jaelynn Miller earned her second save of the season, throwing the 2.2 scoreless innings while recording four strikeouts.

John Jay threatened early for the first run of the contest, as Prince reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and moved into scoring position. A fly out off the bat of Maleea Gallaspy moved Prince to third with just one out, but Guthy was able to retire the next two batters to end the frame.

In the bottom of the inning, Santiago got the leadoff batter, Anna Nunziato, to pop out to Tresch behind-the-plate. The next batter, Jasmine Vera, singled to left and promptly stole second before coming into score on the two-out RBI single to left field from Monahan.

William Paterson added one more run in the bottom of the fourth, taking a two-run advantage as Monahan lofted a deep fly to centerfield that Carly McDaniel, who singled and stole back-to-back bases, tagged up from third and pushed the lead to two.

John Jay got on the board in the top of the fifth. Tresch led off the inning with a double to right field before being moved over on the well-executed sacrifice bunt from Elika Rodrigues

The Pioneers went to the bullpen in the form of Miller. Prince stepped in and reached on fielder's choice sacrifice bunt to third as Tresch was able to cross the plate, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1. Prince stole second but was stranded as Gallaspy grounded out to short before Angelina Schoelles struck out swinging, concluding the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers threatened as Monahan sent a one-out single back up the middle. William Paterson went to their bench as Grace Gaskill reached on a fielder's choice to third and was forced out in the next at-bat, as Kylie Bythrow, sent one to Rylea Sandel at short.

Miller got both Sauers and Tresch to ground to second before striking out Rodrigues on four pitches.

John Jay closes out the 2023 regular season this Saturday against Baruch.
