Softball Splits Regular Season Finale With Baruch On Saturday

New Rochelle, NY - The John Jay softball team split their final series of the 2023 CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) regular season with Baruch, falling to the Bearcats 1-0 in game one before closing out the season with a 5-1 triumph. 
 
With today's results, the Bloodhounds finish the season with a 23-15 overall record and 8-2 record in the league while the Bearcats conclude the year at 15-13 and also 8-2 in the league. 
 
Game 1 - John Jay 0, Baruch 1
Runs were at a premium in game one of Saturday's doubleheader as Baruch's Megan Bell delivered the lone run of the game, a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth as the Bearcats got past the Bloodhounds, 1-0. 
 
Maleea Gallaspy led the way for the Bloodhounds, going 3 for 3. Angelina Schoelles and Mackenzie Tresch added a hit in the contest. 
 
Jailene Santiago went six innings, giving up the lone run on three hits while striking out seven batters. 
 
Bell, Carly Quint and Milagros Arias each had a hit for the Bearcats with Bell's home run providing to be the difference in the contest. 
 
Quint went the full seven, giving up just five hits while striking out five. 
 
Both teams were pitted in a stalemate. The Bloodhounds threatened for the first run in the top of the sixth. 
 
Tresch sent a single up the middle. With one out, Jordyn Prince sent a sacrifice bunt to third as Tresch advanced to second. 
 
The next batter, Gallaspy, reached on an infield single to short and moved to second when Tresch made it to third. Both runners were stranded after Schoelles flew out to end the inning. 
 
Santiago got the first out in the bottom of the sixth but Bell broke through for Baruch, clubbing a solo home run to centerfield, putting the Bearcats ahead, 1-0.
 
Game 2 - John Jay 5, Baruch 1
The two teams started game two similar to their first game, but the Bloodhounds managed to strike first in the top of the third and tack on three more runs in the fifth as John Jay earned the split, defeating the Bearcats, 5-1. 
 
Eight of the nine Bloodhounds recorded a hit, led by a three-hit performances from Sandel and Schoelles. Sandel drove in two RBIs while Gallaspy, who had two hits and two runs scored, added an RBI as did Kayla Sauers
 
Santiago earned her 19th win of the season, going the full seven in giving up one run on eight hits while striking out six batters. 
 
Bell led the Bearcats with three hits while Danielle Petrunti drove in the lone RBI for the home team. 
 
Julia Cuttone went six innings, giving up all five runs on 13 hits. Quint came on in relief, throwing a scoreless seventh in allowing just a hit against the four batters she faced. 
 
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the third when Gallaspy belted her third home run of the season as John Jay went up 1-0. 
 
The Bloodhounds rallied for more as Schoelles and Santiago had back-to-back singles, but were retired on two straight fielder's choice before Sauers grounded out to end the frame. 
 
John Jay added three more runs in the top of the fifth to up their lead to 4-0. Gallaspy started the inning with a double to left while Schoelles drew a walk. 
 
With one out, Sandel lined a triple to left field, bringing in both Schoelles and Gallaspy to make it 3-0. Sauers sent a hard-hit single back up the middle to score Sandel as the Bloodhounds increased their lead. 
 
In the top of the seventh, Sandel led off with a double to left that concluded Cuttone's day inside-the-circle. 
 
Quint came on in relief and gave up an RBI single to Kelly Fajardo as Sandel came across to score, making it 5-0 in favor of the Bloodhounds. 
 
The Bearcats tried to stage a late rally. Jordyn Schwartz singled to center to kick off the bottom of the seventh. 
 
Bell sent a single to center field, giving Baruch a pair of runners on. Santiago got Cuttone to ground out to short, as Schwartz was retired at third. 
 
The next batter, Quint, fouled the ball of to right field for the second out as Bell tagged and advanced to third. 
 
The next batter, Petrunti, singled to center field, scoring Bell, as the Bearcats cut the deficit to four. 
 
Santiago finished the game with a strikeout of Mia Faddah.
