Saratoga Springs, NY - The John Jay men's soccer team jumped out to an early two-goal lead before the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds rallied back with three first-half goals while tacking on six goals as the Bloodhounds fell 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, John Jay falls to 2-2 on the season while Skidmore earns their first win of the season, moving to 1-1-2.
Skidmore seized the early momentum, as two minutes into the contest a shot from Tobias Catizone from the top of the box sailed high. On the next offensive possession from the Thoroughbreds, Hyungbin Kim's shot hit the post from in close on the left wing.
Skidmore continued to apply pressure, as Colin Goodhines had to shot attempts, one was blocked from inside the box and the other, in the sixth minute, sailed wide left.
The score remained knotted at nill-nill following a diving stop from Tyler Solis on Nick Jardim's attempt from near point-blank range.
John Jay capitalized on their first chance of the match in the 13' as Daniel Rosa sent a back-footed pass into the box that was settled down by Junior Guaman who pushed one past Skidmore's Luca Bravo Frederick to give the visitors the early 1-0 lead.
For Guaman, it marked his first of the season and second career goal, while Rosa recorded his first collegiate assist in the process.
Two minutes later, a foul was called on Skidmore which set up a penalty shot opportunity for the Bloodhounds. Justin Gharbin stepped up and converted on the chance, which extended the John Jay lead to 2-0 on Gharbin's second score of the season and 11th of his career.
The home team staged a rally, with Kim testing Solis on a shot from inside the box that Solis turned aside before Perry Sofis-Scheft rocketed a chance from in close on the left side that was also denied by Solis.
Skidmore cut the deficit in half, 2-1, as Kim received a thru-ball from Catizone as the high shot attempt rattled to the back of the net to put the Thoroughbreds on the board.
Solis continued to preserve the one-goal advantage, as the junior netminder made two stops on Skidmore's ensuing six chances. The Bloodhounds nearly added to their lead as Joshua Escobar sent the corner into the box that Kevin Cantos headed high over the net.
Skidmore found the equalizer in the 27' as Goodhines first attempt hit the post before he got the cross from Sofis-Scheft and headed the ball past Solis' out-stretched reach to tie the game at 2-2.
Five minutes later, the home team took their first lead of the match, which proved to be the game-winner for Skidmore, as Josh Hocheiser was able to string a pass through a pair of Bloodhound defenders and Max Mian finished for his first of the season, giving Skidmore a 3-2 lead.
John Jay narrowly tied the match on the next offensive series as Mario Parano's attempt hit the crossbar from the right wing. Gharbin nearly got his second goal of the contest but his chance was stopped by the newly-inserted keeper, Ben Gibeau.
The Bloodhounds regained control of the tempo to end the first half, as Escobar's attempt went wide right before Cantos had his chance blocked in the box. The last of the opportunities came in the final moments as Damian Coronel booted a shot that went right of the target.
When play resumed for the second, it was Skidmore that raced out to a commanding lead, as Brady Trenchard netted his first of the season off the assists from Alex Llerena and Kim three minutes into the frame. Catizone finished off the cross from Kim, as he headed the ball past Solis, extending the Thoroughbreds lead by three, 5-2.
Back-to-back goals in a three span from Goodhines and Kim increased the home team's lead to 7-2 as Kim completed the hat trick in the 59'. Garvin tacked on Skidmore's eighth goal of the match before Connor Mansfield ended the scoring with his first of the season.
John Jay was outshot 33-10 in the contest despite Solis making nine saves on the evening. Gharbin led the way with three shot attempts, two of which finding their way on target.
The Bloodhounds, who wrapped up their four-game road swing 1-2-0 (their Sarah Lawrence contest was postponed due to inclement weather) returns home on Saturday, September 16, as they welcome Arcadia to Randall's Island – Field 75.
Kickoff is set for noon.
