Five First Half Goals Propel Women's Soccer To Road Victory Over Penn State Abington On Wednesday

Abington, PA - The John Jay women's soccer team erupted for five first-half scores, two of which came off the foot of graduate forward Nora O'Connor as the Bloodhounds picked up a 6-1 road triumph over Penn State Abington on Wednesday.

With the victory, John Jay moves to 2-1 on the season while Abington falls to 1-3 overall.

Abington held the first chance of the match as Nayesko Ravelo fired a chance from the top that didn't find its way on target.

On the ensuing Bloodhound possession, tri-captain Brooke Fontaine found O'Connor who blasted her team-leading fifth goal seven minutes into the match off the breakaway, giving John Jay an early 1-0 edge.

The Nittany Lions nearly evened the match at the ten-minute mark as Madison McDowell sent a low-lining chance that found the waiting arms of John Jay's goalkeeper, Lily Velo

In the 18', it was O'Connor distributing the ball, as she crossed the ball to teammate Mikayla Schoch for her second goal of the season as the visitors went ahead by two. For the newcomer O'Connor, it marked her first assist as a member of the Bloodhounds and first of her collegiate career.

The Bloodhounds continued to apply pressure and was rewarded in the 23' as Zoe Specht shot one from the right side for the goal. For the Aston, PA, it was her first collegiate goal that made it a three-goal advantage.

The visitors tacked on their fourth goal as O'Connor struck for her second of the contest, getting the feed from Lucia Giangaspero in the 32'. With the goal, O'Connor racked up her sixth of the season while Giangaspero registered her first helper of the year and third of her career.

The final marker of the first stanza came in the 39' minute as sophomore Daniela Vazquez converted on her first goal of the season after Vazquez broke free of her defender and Emma Fisher spotted Vazquez with a well-timed feed. For Fisher, it is her second career helper.

John Jay notched their season-high sixth goal as Fontaine beat Abington's Abby Brunnell, who garnered the second-half start for the home team.

With a little over twelve minutes remaining in the contest, Abington got on the board as Grace Burns beat Velo after getting the pass from Madison McDowell.

For the match, John Jay outshot Abington, 14-9, with a 8-3 edge on shots that were on target. Velo made two stops as did her counterpart Brunnell.
