Purchase, N.Y. The John Jay women's tennis team extended their win streak, collecting their first-ever win against Purchase, 5-4, on Thursday afternoon.
The Bloodhounds took an early lead with two of three doubles points, but after dropping the first three singles points, John Jay's top three would swing the pendulum back to a Bloodhound win.
"Throughout this three match winning streak, we continue to be so proud of our team as they battle and persevere against challenging and well coached opponents," said head coach David Muchnick. "There's a great positive energy throughout our program right now and every Bloodhound has had a significant role in creating that. Onwards and upwards!"
Opening the scoring, the Panthers third doubles team scored an 8-2. The Bloodhounds' first doubles (Antigone Alexander and Dakota Himaya) and second doubles (Sarina Moi and Cindy Liguicota) gave the visitors their first lead of the match; winning their sets by just a combined five points.
In singles competition, John Jay fought from behind after Purchase scored from the four, five and six singles position. Himaya's decisive 6-3, 6-1 win at third singles set the tone for top spots. At second singles, Moi forced a tiebreaker against Olivia Menchell and notched a 10-4 win. All eyes then turned to Alexander's battle with Amelia Perlmutter with the number one singles point. After taking the first set, Alexander took the decisive set to a tiebreak as well; taking the team win with a 7-3 tiebreaker victory.
This marks the first three match regular season win streak for the team since 2019.
