Men's Soccer's Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Baruch In CUNYAC Home Opener On Saturday

Queens, NY - Trailing by two goals midway through the second half, the John Jay men's soccer team cut the deficit in half in the 63' minute but couldn't find the match-tying score, falling to Baruch, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

With the setback, the Bloodhounds falter to 2-6-1 overall and 0-1-1 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while the Bearcats move to 3-4-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in league action.

Both teams were aggressive in their shot selections early in the contest, as the Bearcats tested Arthur Langlet in the opening minutes of the match, as Ammar Ahmedshaker fired the free kick that was stopped.

Kevin Luciano's free kick veered left of the goal in the 6' minute. The Bloodhounds continued to apply pressure, as Joshua Escobar and Luciano fired back-to-back shots, but were denied by Jon Legasa.

Three minutes later on Baruch's next possession, Arman Celebi fired a left wing shot that was stopped by Langlet, keeping the match scoreless.

The visitors seized the momentum as in the 22' minute, the Bearcats struck for the first goal of the match. Daniel Grishin launched the corner kick attempt into the box that found the foot of Luis Madriz, who finished the chance, giving Baruch a 1-0 edge.

Baruch upped their lead four minutes later as Daniel Fomenko stole the ball away from Langlet and finished at the wide-open net. The Bearcats nearly went up by three as Wessam Farang booted a ball on target but Junior Guaman made the defensive save for John Jay.

With the second half commencing, it was the Bloodhounds that built up the offensive flurry. Mario Parano's shot from just outside the box sailed high over the goal. Two minutes later, he had a second chance, but, similarly, he misdirected the opportunity high over the net.

John Jay's Tyler Solis, who started the second half, made a fantastic save, keeping the Bearcats off the board in the opening few moments of the stanza.

Parano continued his strong showing, as on the next John Jay possession, he narrowly scored but the ball hit the post and trickled away. On his next chance, he dove into the box and headed the ball that was geared toward the bottom right of the net, but Legasa was there to make the stop.

Baruch looked to build on their lead, but Solis was there to stop a chance from Taner Ceylan in the 59' and one from Julio Ramirez in the 62'. A few seconds after, Rajay Officer's chance dinged off the post.

John Jay got on the board in the 63' as Luciano converted off the feed from Guaman, as the Bloodhounds trailed by one, 2-1.

The Bloodhounds continued to fight valiantly, as Jonathan Granados headed the ball in the box but was stopped by Legasa. In the 84', Daniel Rosa also had a header stopped by Legasa.

John Jay had one final chance as Justin Gharbin's header sailed wide of the target.

Solis finished with seven saves in the second while Langlet posted five stops in the first half. Their counterpart, Legasa, made six stops.

John Jay resumes CUNYAC play on Wednesday, October 4, as they will take on CCNY on Randall's Island - Field 10 at 7:00 p.m.
